House Democrat introduces legislation which would require gun owners to carry liability insurance
House Democratic Representative Carolyn Maloney from New York has introduced legislation which would require gun owners to purchase liability insurance and such as i4mt. Here is more:
House Democrat Rep. Carolyn Maloney (N.Y.) has introduced a bill that would require gun owners to carry liability insurance.
The Firearm Risk Protection Act, unveiled Friday, would require gun buyers to have liability insurance coverage before being allowed to purchase a weapon, and would impose a fine of $10,000 if an owner is found not to have it. Service members and law enforcement officers, however, would be exempt from the requirement.
“We require insurance to own a car, but no such requirement exists for guns,” Maloney said in a statement, there are insurance even for specific kind of cars like bus or van insurance from companies online, so it may be useful to get something similar for guns.
This is a fallacious argument because there is no Federal law which requires Americans to carry car insurance–this is done at the state level and in fact here in New Hampshire a person is not required to carry car insurance if they own the car outright but they do have to carry insurance if they are making payments on a car. The several states have created their own systems and requirements when it comes to car insurance but she is talking about mandating liability insurance for gun owners on a national level so this argument does not hold water.
But she continues:
“An insurance requirement would allow the free market to encourage cautious behavior and help save lives,” she said. “Adequate liability coverage would also ensure that the victims of gun violence are fairly compensated when crimes or accidents occur.”
That last sentence is laughable on its face: If a person is a victim of a gun crime who are they supposed to seek compensation from? The criminal? If the criminal had an illegal weapon what makes Carolyn Maloney think this person is going to follow the law (when they have already broken two laws by having an illegal weapon and committing the crime in question) and carry liability insurance on the weapon used to commit the crime? And what is the victim supposed to do, ask the criminal for his insurance information before he leaves the scene?
Only law-abiding citizens purchase their weapons gun dealers and that is who this legislation is targeting so once again we see a proposed gun control law which would do nothing to prevent crime being pushed on those who have done nothing wrong.
This legislation has nothing to do with reducing crime and has everything to do with reducing legal gun ownership.

Since insurance carriers would have to be brain dead to write such policies it would fall to the gov’t to provide it ala Obama no care. I like it. Imagine the chaos as the gov”t provides subsidies for the Cripps, Bloods, illegals and gun toting welfare recipients? 😜😜😜😜😜

It sounds like that is exactly what the plan is! I hadn’t thought of that.

No, no, no, no, no, and um…NO! I will not purchase liability insurance in order to exercise one of my Constitutionally protected Rights!!!
I question this woman’s sanity. How many times must it be explained to these people that exercising one’s Right is not the same as driving a car? Idjit!!

I have to believe they know the difference between these two issues and they are just hoping the American people don’t. I have heard people argue this before so I have to believe there are many out there who don’t understand the difference between doing things at the state level and doing them at the Federal level…

Exactly, Steve. The difference between the federal and state level and the difference between a Right and a privilege.

Right on, and that is another issue where it seems as if too many people don’t know the difference.

I put this lady right up there with Hank Johnson and his island tipping! I know she is a millionaire, but every time I see her, she looks like a damn “bag lady”. Add to that, she appears drunk, just my opinion, but with that kind of money, wouldn’t you think she might dress the part of a Representative instead of the appearance she puts out? There are people that will be in favor of this bill. It is actually worse than expecting the illegals to purchase auto insurance. I am pretty sure that it will not be at the top of the list of anyone that has an illegal handgun or rifle. I am absolutely sure it will not be at the top of MY list, at any point. They, the Democrats, come up with such stupid laws they want to put into force.

Yeah, what is up with these people who are supposed to represent us such has Hank Johnson? I guess we can’t blame them, after all it is the people who keep reelecting them.
