House Republicans to unveil changes to the Obamacare repeal legislation

March 20, 2017

According to this story the House Republicans are going to release changes to the Obamacare repeal legislation later on tonight. Here is more

House Republican leaders are poised to release Monday evening an expansive series of changes to their Obamacare repeal bill in a last-ditch attempt to win enough support to get the bill passed.

Requested by President Donald Trump, the amendment includes perks for restive conservatives who wanted optional work requirements and block granting in Medicaid, as well as a potential olive branch to wary centrists who demanded more help for older Americans to buy insurance, POLITICO has learned.

Here is what we can expect:

The amendment would establish a reserve fund of at least $75 billion for tax credits to help the core constituency that propelled Trump to the White House: Americans between 50 and 64, who would see their premiums skyrocket under the current repeal plan.

The above-linked article states that these tax credits are not actually included in the bill but the Senate would be instructed to add them in after the House votes on the bill. I do not like the sound of that, but here is more:

The amendment is also expected to repeal Obamacare’s taxes a year earlier than originally planned, a win for conservatives who want to eliminate the Affordable Care Act as quickly a possible.

Among other changes to the repeal bill, the amendment would delete a provision that would have allowed consumers to move leftover tax credit money into a Health Savings Account. Anti-abortion groups had raised concerns that the provision might be eliminated under the Senate’s strict budget rules and inadvertently allow for taxpayer funding of abortion.

The amendment would also change federal Medicaid reimbursement rates for the elderly and disabled, a win for governors who were concerned about cuts.

This is still not a full repeal of Obamacare and as such it seems unlikely to win the support of people like Rand Paul and Ted Cruz.

A house is only a good as its foundation. The foundation of the AHCA is the ACA. I fear that the Republican regime is going to screw things up so bad that we will have to go single payer to fix the mess.

Where is the magic money for single payer coming from? If you are paying x for health insurance now you will need to pay 2x or more in taxes when there is single payer. The VA and Tricare are two examples of Government run health care systems and they do not work.

Single payer means those with money can buy their own health care and the rest of the population will just need to suffer and die.

You’re preaching to the choir. The Republican Congress needs to repeal the ACA and rebuild from scratch. Otherwise we’re going to be back to square one with a whole mess of new problems.

I agree, if they are going to do this they need to start from the beginning. All they are going to do by trying to piecemeal this thing together is screw it up.

I think the plan for the Democrats was always to go to single payer but how ironic will it be if it ends up being the Republicans who make it happen with their ineptitude? Unless they were also in on it…

This is a lot of bs. This is so everyone can feel good and say they tried. If the bill passes it goes to the Senate where Mitch will sell out to the AMA, Insurance Industry, big Pharma, and Hospital lobbyist and their bill.

“Brave New World” has come to mind and this seems to fit right in w/ it.
When someone writes something so in par (in tune) with what’s going on today, back then, makes me wonder about the source behind the imagination: predicting how things will be because of the mindset of those in power positions.
    The actual movie:

Scrubbing ‘Obama’s’ name from it totally would be a good start. Why keep anything of that fraud and anti-American in the system?! Now were back to the movie again!

CJ nailed it. What they are doing is just for show. McConnell will take care of all the special interest groups as he has for years.
