Donald Trump takes aim at the Freedom Caucus

March 30, 2017

We all know Donald Trump has an affinity for taking to Twitter to lambaste his opponents and with his Obamcare replacement bill going down in flames he is at it again–this time taking on the Freedom Caucus.

Members of the Freedom Caucus were among the first people to support Donald Trump if my memory serves me correctly, certainly Paul Ryan (who the President has now aligned himself with) was not and the Freedom Caucus did him a favor by killing Obamcare-lite but of course Donald Trump does not see it that way.

Donald Trump is going to need the Freedom Caucus if he wants to get anything done so it would be best for him not to antagonize them with threats after one setback.

The Obamacare replacement bill was rushed to the table and only minimal changes were allowed, these changes were not enough to get the votes so the bill was pulled. Instead of threatening the caucus he should vow to work with them as well as the establishment to see if a suitable compromise can be reached. I think it was a mistake to go after them.

Regular readers of America’s Watchtower know that I have questions about how conservative Donald Trump really is and this does nothing to alleviate my concerns. It is going to be interesting to see where we go from here. It is also going to be interesting to see how the President’s most ardent supporters are going to react to him siding with the establishment wing of the the Republican party.

Trump is playing with fire. His core of grassroots conservative supporters should not be taken for granted. He will need more than the support of his liberal New York buddies to be re elected.

I agree Peter! The establishment and Trump should learn to work with the conservatives and not bash them after one loss which could turn out to be a win if they get a better bill.

Steve Bannon threatening probably didn’t help much. The Freedom caucus can be a stubborn bunch as evidenced by the last 3-4 years.

The FC should have had their own bill ready. They knew the Speaker was dihonest and was not working with them. They are also dishonest for saying repeal the ACA when they know that can not happen in the Senate. They can attemt to pass a bill in the House to repeal the ACA, but I doubt that they have the votes. Even if they did pass a bill it would be amended in the Senate by the Democrats under the rules for budget reconciliation legislation or worse 3 Republicans would join the Dem and kill the bill.

Next up is the CR for the remainder of the FY 2017 budget due by the end of April. Can the FC show some leadership?

Yeah, they have had years to get something ready and they never did and this goes for all the Republicans as well. There is no reason why they could not have had something ready to go on day one.
