Donald Trump to end DACA…in six months

September 4, 2017

It is pretty clear to me that Donald Trump is torn on ending Barack Obama’s DACA program. I believe he personally wants to keep DACA in place however he made a campaign promise to end it.

It is now being reported here that Donald Trump’s “solution” is to announce he is ending DACA but delaying the implementation of the Executive Order for six months in order to give the Congress time to act.

President Donald Trump has decided to end the Obama-era program that grants work permits to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country as children, according to two sources familiar with his thinking. Senior White House aides huddled Sunday afternoon to discuss the rollout of a decision likely to ignite a political firestorm — and fulfill one of the president’s core campaign promises.

In a nod to reservations held by many lawmakers, the White House plans to delay the enforcement of the president’s decision for six months, giving Congress a window to act, according to one White House official. But a senior White House aide said that chief of staff John Kelly, who has been running the West Wing policy process on the issue, “thinks Congress should’ve gotten its act together a lot longer ago.”

I agree with John Kelly in that the Congress should have gotten its act together a long time ago and maybe this is the only way to get them to act. The problem is that while most Americans oppose DACA both the Democrats and the establishment Republicans in the Congress support Barack Obama’s Executive Order…although for different reasons.

Because of this not much is going to change: the Congress will come up with some type of replacement bill which will not be very different from DACA. (We have already seen this with Obamacare.) It will be interesting to see what Donald Trump does at that time. I believe he will sign it and then try to blame the Congress for not getting a better bill to his desk. I think the President is trying to have it both ways here.

The do nothing Congress can they do this before the beginning of an election year? This would be a suicide for many Republicans, but many i.e. Speaker Ryan don’t care about the voters.

It is going to be interesting to see how this plays out, that is for sure. Ryan knows he is safe so he can do whatever he wants to, but how I would love to see this come back to bite him!
