‘Above All’
Over the Lenten season I started writing a series of posts on Christianity which I intended to culminate on Resurrection Sunday with this post. But it struck me it would be out of place to focus on the death of Jesus on the day we are celebrating Him rising from the dead and what it means for all of us. It seems more appropriate to share this today on Good Friday.
A few weeks ago when we were at worship on Sunday morning the praise band played a song I had not heard them play before, in fact I had never heard any version of this song before. When the chorus came in I was hit with emotion; I felt a shudder in my body, and my eyes welled up. The song is called “Above All” and here are the lyrics which struck me:
Laid behind the stone
You lived to die
Rejected and alone
You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all
Here is a video of the song set to scenes from “The Passion of the Christ.” I know this movie is hard to watch but I find it to be a very powerful reminder of what happened on that day.

We sang this song at church a week or two ago. It is a beautiful song.

Thank you so much for sharing this! This is one question I am still trying to figure out! I don’t know if I mentioned this before but I went to Catholic school for 71/2 years. We often recited the Apostle’s Creed and I still remember one time a teacher telling us Jesus could not descend into hell because He was God, but that he descended into Purgatory.
When I read through the NT for the first time I was struck by Ephesians 4 and 1 Peter 3 where Jesus rescuing the imprisoned souls after He died are mentioned. I put notes in my Bible asking if this is where the doctrine of Jesus descending into hell came from. In my notes I called this a “Catholic Doctrine” because I didn’t know where Protestants stood on this.
Sheol as described in the article you linked to would seem to be a sort of Purgatory and I find this very interesting. If you have more on this I would love to read it.
One other thing I would love more information on is Melchizedek if you have anything about him I would love to read it.

Thanks, I thought that verse kind of summed it all up! And also in following up John 15:13 Jesus told His disciples nobody would take His life from Him, he would lay it down willingly.
