Colorado becomes the 12th state to pass National Popular Vote legislation

Knowing how difficult it would be to amend the Constitution to abolish the Electoral College there has been a movement underway for several years to eliminate it through the states. This is called the National Popular Vote and while the sky-screamers just learned about the Electoral College in 2016 this movement has been silently happening for quite awhile. (The first post I found in which I wrote about the National Popular Vote was from 2010.)

The way it works is simple, a state passes legislation which would award its electoral votes to whichever candidate won the national popular vote. When enough states have passed this legislation the Electoral College will be null and void for all intents and purposes.

According to this story Colorado has become the 12th state to pass this legislation, here is more:

Colorado has become the latest state — and the first swing state — to join a group pledging to elect presidents based on who wins the national popular vote.

Eleven other states and the District of Columbia have signed onto the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, an agreement that requires those states to select their presidential electors based on who wins the most individual votes nationwide, regardless of which candidate wins in the state.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill Friday bringing the state into the compact.

The compact only goes into effect once states with at least 270 electoral votes — the number needed to win a presidential election — have signed on. While the addition of Colorado brings the electoral count of states in the compact to 181, reaching the 270 point before the 2020 election appears unlikely.

The movement is now within 100 electoral votes of their goal, slowly but surely they are getting there and it is only a matter of time before they are successful at changing the Constitution without changing the Constitution.

Chief Warren espoused this at a town hall meeting in Mississippi, in front of the very people who would be screwed by eliminating the Electoral College. And they cheered.

They don’t even understand how it works or why it is in place, all they know is that because of it Trump is President and so it must be bad in their eyes. I wonder how many of them ever heard of it before 2016.
