New York Governor declares gun violence a public health crisis, seizes emergency powers

July 6, 2021

I really do hate to be the guy who says I told you so but back when Donald Trump was threatening to declare a national emergency at the Southern border to circumvent the Congress and fund the border wall through fiat I warned people that eventually a Democrat would be back in the White House and he or she could use Donald Trump’s example to declare global warming or gun control a national emergency to push forward his or her radical agenda.

It did not take Nancy Pelosi long to come to the same conclusion back in 2019 and now New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is making a test run of his own, preparing the way for a national emergency declaration if all goes well. The would-be dictator has declared gun violence in his State to be a public health crisis and has usurped emergency powers to fight the epidemic. Here is more:

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has issued the first-in-the-nation Executive Order declaring gun violence in New York as a Disaster Emergency — the first step in a comprehensive plan that aims to tackle the surge in gun violence throughout the state.

The disaster emergency status will allow the state to address the gun violence crisis by expediting money and resources to communities so they can begin targeting gun violence immediately.

This new strategy treats gun violence as a public health crisis, using short-term solutions to manage the immediate gun violence crisis and reduce the shooting rate, as well as long-term solutions that focus on community-based intervention and prevention strategies to break the cycle of violence.

Here are some of the key points:

Treat gun violence like the emergency public health it is;

Target hotspots with data and science;

Positive engagement for at-risk youth;

Break the cycle of escalating violence;

Get illegal guns off the streets;

Keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people;

Rebuild the police-community relationship

What is the reason the police-community relationship needs to be rebuilt for in the first place? Could it be Democratic politicians supporting the defund movement? But I digress…

It sounds all very well and good on the surface but we know what is going to happen when more and more of the States start following suit, and then what will happen when the Federal Government decides to take a crack at gun control through Executive Order…

    Dumb move by Trump. Ten years in jail if you don’t destroy yours.

    The Bump Stock Ban, which took effect on Tuesday, March 26th, 2019 was enacted by the Trump Administration to reclassify bump stock devices as machine guns, and therefore subject to regulation as part of the Gun Control Act of 1968. The transfer or possession of bump stocks became prohibited under this new amendment to the law, subject to penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison and $250,000 in fines for each violation

    The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday handed President Donald Trump a victory by rejecting for the second time in three days a bid by gun rights activists to block his new ban on “bump stock” attachments that enable semi-automatic weapons to fire rapidly.

    In the days before the rule change reclassifying the stocks went into effect on March 26, RW was selling the devices for between $105 to $450, making the parts destroyed to comply with the prohibition worth millions. Under the rule, bump stock owners must either destroy the stocks or abandon them at an ATF office without reimbursement for their cost or value.

      That’s another good example. People tried to play off the bump stock ban by saying it was only a novelty item anyway and they did it because they did not want to admit Trump has enacting gun law by fiat. This is the next step and I wish people had spoken out when Trump did it.
