FDR’s D-Day Prayer

Sixty-three years ago today, as more than 150,000 Allied servicemen invaded Nazi-occupied Europe, President Franklin Roosevelt offered the following prayer. As you read it, it is worth considering whether a President could deliver such a speech today.
MY FELLOW Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far.
And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:
Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.
Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.
They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.
They will be sore tried, by night and by day, without rest — until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men’s souls will be shaken with the violences of war.
For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. They fight to let justice arise, and tolerance and good will among all Thy people. They yearn but for the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home.
Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive them, Thy heroic servants, into Thy kingdom.
And for us at home — fathers, mothers, children, wives, sisters and brothers of brave men overseas — whose thoughts and prayers are ever with them — help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice.
Many people have urged that I call the nation into a single day of special prayer. But because the road is long and the desire is great, I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts.
Give us strength, too — strength in our daily tasks, to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces.
And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be.
And, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee; Faith in our sons; Faith in each other; Faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose.
With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil.
Thy will be done, Almighty God.
Amen.
Wow. To answer the question asked in the paragraph preceding the prayer, in a word, NO. There will never again be a day when a president can pray during a speech to the American people. Never mind call for a national day of prayer.
If only FDR could see what has happened to his Democrat party. They do not have the courage or the resolve that FDR had. I’m sure somewhere he is saddened.
The true driving factor behind the whole global warming frenzy is simple- taxes. That is why we see politicians as the leading voices on this issue. Here is an article that says carbon taxes are inevitable.
A tax-based approach to reducing carbon emissions “is going to happen,” a panel of economists and tax analysts agreed Tuesday, differing only on whether a carbon tax or a cap-and-trade system would be the best approach.
“This is going to happen anyway so we might as well enjoy it,” Eric Toder, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, said during a discussion at the organization’s Washington, D.C., headquarters. “And maybe something good will come of it.”
This is coming from tax analyists and economists, but don’t think the politicians aren’t in on it. Just mention new taxes and you can see the Democrats faces light up.
He says they are coming so we might as well enjoy it. We are supposed to enjoy having our money taken in a scam? Usually when someone is caught in a scam they have to go to jail, politicians will be allowed to scam us and laugh at us all the way to the bank.
Not enough people realize what is going on here, and the media and politicians are talking about global warming as if it is fact, when it is still an unproved theory. Many scientists find the idea of man-made global warming as outrageous.
Toder and three other panelists discussed the costs and benefits of the two approaches to reducing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), which some scientists believe contributes to global climate change.
See that last sentence, SOME SCIENTISTS. We need to stop these people from perpetrating this hoax on us.
A bill currently in the U.S. Senate would create a cap-and-trade system for electricity plants and set carbon emissions standards for automobiles, beginning in 2016.
Drafted by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the measure is under consideration in the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee.
Toder said it is likely that any proposal that ends up passing will include tax incentives and a major public relations push, because “any kind of new tax is likely to create a tremendous amount of resistance.”
“Given political realities, tax incentives will have to be part” of whatever bill is passed, Toder said. “You would really need to make the offsets very, very compelling to get people to agree to it.”
They are not going to get the vast majority of people to agree to the tax as the last sentence says, they are going to force people to agree with the tax just by implementing it.
A Massachusetts’ group gathered up sufficient votes to send a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage to the states’ constitutional convention, where they are required to vote as to whether the proposed amendment should be placed on the ballet for a vote. Was that a run on sentence or what, anyway, I digress. The committee is scared to death to vote on the issue because they know it will be voted for and will have to appear on the ballet for the voters. They also know the voters are against the illegally instituted gay marriage law by a court overstepping it’s bounds. So they have, against the state constitution managed to delay voting on this issue so that it will be voted on too late to appear on the ballet.
Now their governor, Deval Patrick, has come up with a way to eliminate the members of the legislature who would vote to send this issue to the ballet. He is offering them cushy government hack jobs in return for their resignation before the vote.

A leading gay marriage opponent is urging top prosecutors to probe allegations that the Patrick administration has floated job offers to induce anti-gay marriage lawmakers to leave the Legislature before a critical vote next week.
Kris Mineau, spokesman for VoteOnMarriage.org, said he has heard persistent complaints about alleged job offers as lobbying has intensified in recent days. Lawmakers are scheduled to vote next Thursday on whether to put a proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage on the ballot in 2008.
“From what we’re hearing (of the job offers), the level of this would warrant a look by the (state) attorney general or the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Mineau said yesterday. “If one were to read the laws about bribery in government, this would appear to fall into that category.”
Patrick previously denied making job offers after the Herald reported that he had made such overtures to lawmakers. A spokesman for Patrick said last night, “Employment decisions in this administration are based on qualifications and the merits.”
Mineau said he has not directly contacted Attorney General Martha Coakley or the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston to ask for a formal investigation. He also declined to identify specific lawmakers who have allegedly received job offers, saying he does not want to subject them to more public scrutiny. Patrick is currently trying to fill several posts in agencies overseen by his office.“The pressure on our legislators is absolutely unprecedented,” Mineau said yesterday. He said the calls are not just coming from local gay marriage supporters, but from national officials such as Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-New York), Democratic Party chief Howard Dean and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who held an event at the Park Plaza Hotel yesterday and a fund-raiser last night.
As of the last official count, the proposed ban would pass by seven votes, but supporters of gay marriage have been lobbying fiercely to turn the tables.
“We’re continuing to work hard, and the legislators are listening,” said Marc Solomon, campaign director of MassEquality, which is leading efforts to keep gay marriage legal. “We have had good discussions with a number of legislators who have not yet voted with us.”
I guess the ends jusifies the means. Reward the people you don’t agree with you to get them out of the way, and then you have the means to implement your agenda regardless of the will of the people.
Mayor Bloomberg is rumored to be considering a third party run for the presidency. So what does someone with presidential aspirations have to say when a terror plot is uncovered in his city?
While questions continue to arise about the alleged plot to blow up a fuel pipeline beneath JFK Airport and surrounding neighborhoods, some are questioning why New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg hasn’t had a louder voice since the plot was foiled on Saturday.
On Monday, Bloomberg finally weighed in, but his response was not what some would have expected.
“There are lots of threats to you in the world. There’s the threat of a heart attack for genetic reasons. You can’t sit there and worry about everything. Get a life,” he said.
Don’t worry, be happy. Does this sound like a man who you would trust with the security of this nation?
That “What, me worry?” attitude pretty much sums up Bloomberg’s advice to New Yorkers on the terror plot.
“You have a much greater danger of being hit by lightning than being struck by a terrorist,” he added.
Senate Democrat’s Poll Numbers are in a Freefall
This is from a Washington Post/ABC poll:
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows only 39 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing — down from 44 percent in April. Approval of congressional Democrats dropped 10 points over that same period, from 54 percent to 44 percent, the Washington Post reported.
Has one item of their agenda made it to the presidents desk? I don’t think so. This is turning out to be the real do nothing congress we heard about before the election.
They passed a bunch of feel good legislation in the much celebrated first 100 hours, yet none of it has become law.
Smoking Ban in Place- What’s next New Hampshire?
This editorial appeared in the New Hampshire Union Leader, it shows more disapproval with the new direction New Hampshire is headed.
Whether or not you are for or against the new smoking ban in restaurants and bars, the government has no right to intervene in this manner and tell a private business owner how to run his business. If you don’t like smoke go to a place that doesn’t allow smoking because the owner made that decision, not the government. If they do allow smoking, go somewhere else. YOU DO HAVE FREE WILL.

HAIL! HAIL! to King John Lynch and his merry group of SS Storm Troopers who have struck at the heart and spirit of the New Hampshire Constitution with their approval on Thursday of the bill to ban smoking in bars and restaurants.
To pass and sign into law a bill telling business owners who their customers will or will not be strikes the heart of a free society. The basic foundation in any free society is to allow people, business owners in particular, the right to decide whom they wish to attract as customers.
Despite the fact that nearly 75 percent of all restaurant and bar owners in New Hampshire have instituted a smoking ban on their own without government intrusion, this Legislature and the governor are about to embark on an uncharted path to destroy the basic foundation of this state.
The edges of the paper upon which the state’s constitution is written have been scorned. The state’s boundary lines have been shaded to the point where one does not know where one neighboring state ends and another begins. We are no longer able to stand proudly and say we are from New Hampshire: the “Live free or die” state.
The “Live free or die” mottoes at the entrances to our state should have black bands placed around them forever, as a basic fundamental individual right has been taken away by these “we know what’s best for you” representatives.
In effect, these elected residents have struck a knife deep into the heart and spirit of the New Hampshire Constitution. The bleeding has begun. The fundamental right to decide one’s own fate is no longer an option. The right to own and operate a business and operate that business to attract specific customers is no more.
New Hampshire’s individual status as a free state has been lost forever. Like the brave folks who tried to defend the Alamo many years ago, we must always remember “the election,” the vote that put into office these traitors to our state constitution and state motto.
These words may seem hash. In fact, they are as hash as the reality of the passage of this bill. There are many folks around this state whose hearts are filled with sadness, as is mine. A sense of hopelessness fills the air that we breathe, for there is this train, a train filled with elected officials hellbent on destroying our basic fundamental right to make decisions on our own.
It’s scary to think of where this train will stop next on its way to eroding personal freedoms. Perhaps the next stop will be at your door.
Rep. William Jefferson has finally been indicted on bribery charges.
It should be a crime that it took this long. If this man was a Republican he would have been forced to step down two years ago. The Democrats would have been all over television screaming for his resignation. The Republicans never came out against this man. I guess that shows you the character the Republicans display compared to the Democrats. Yet he was allowed to run for re-election and the voters were to blind to vote him out.
Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., was indicted Monday on federal charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering in a long- running bribery investigation into business deals he tried to broker in Africa.
The indictment handed up in federal court in Alexandria., Va., Monday is 94 pages long and lists 16 alleged violations of federal law that could keep Jefferson in prison for up to 235 years. He is charged with racketeering, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, money-laundering, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
What you don’t see in this article and what you probably won’t see anywhere were the actions this man took after hurricane Katrina to try and hide his bribe money. You can read my post about this here. This man is reprehensible.
Now house minority leader John Boehner will move to vote on his expulsion. The question here is, will the Democrats vote for his expulsion? Or will the side with the culture of corruption they committed to ending during their campaign last year?
Just the fact that they were able to campaign on a more open, and honest congress when they knew this man was among them all along shows you both the audacity of the Democrats, and the shortsightedness of their constituents.
Vermont Activists want to Secede from the USA
They want Vermont to secede from the United States — peacefully, of course.Disillusioned by what they call an empire about to fall, a small cadre of writers and academics is plotting political strategy and planting the seeds of separatism.
They’ve published a “Green Mountain Manifesto” subtitled “Why and How Tiny Vermont Might Help Save America From Itself by Seceding from the Union.” They hope to put the question before citizens at Town Meeting Day next March, eventually persuading the state Legislature to declare independence, returning Vermont to the status it held from 1777 to 1791.

I have only one thing to say to all Vermont residents who would want to stay in the USA if Vermont were ever to pull of this ridiculous idea. Actually it’s a plee. Please flee to Massachusetts and not New Hampshire. We already have enough of your refugees here screwing up our state. Besides we are new to the nanny state, Massachusetts has it down pat, you would be more comfortable there.
As I predicted in my original post on this thwarted terror plot on JFK airport, it would only be a matter of time before Bush was blamed for it.
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, HOST: I want to get back to my first question, but let me pick up on something you said just there. You believe that these homegrown terrorist plots are being inspired by the U.S. work in Iraq right now?
JOHN MURTHA, CONGRESSMAN: Absolutely. George, they were inspired by them all over the world. Our presence in Iraq, our occupation in Iraq, gives these people the inspiration. Now, we didn’t have this problem before, they came from Afghanistan. But, now we even have it in the United States. So, I’m absolutely convinced that this is the kind of thing that inspires these people.
And there it is, the reprehensible John Murtha is the first to blame Bush. It’s the Iraq war that is causing all future terror plots according to him. Instead of giving credit for the great work that was done to bring this plot down, great work authorized by president Bush, he immediately has to try and blame the president. Someone needs to remind him that these so-called homegrown terrorists attacked us on our soil before we were over there.

Democrats Hiding Earmarks in Upcoming Bills
When the Democrats ran for congress last year, they promised to be an open congress and end earmarks in bills. It appears as though they are not quite living up to this promise.
Rather than including specific pet projects, grants and contracts in legislation as it is being written, Democrats are following an order by the House Appropriations Committee chairman to keep the bills free of such earmarks until it is too late for critics to effectively challenge them.
Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., says those requests for dams, community grants and research contracts for favored universities or hospitals will be added to spending measures in the fall. That is when House and Senate negotiators assemble final bills.
Such requests total billions of dollars.
Let’s face it, all politicians love earmark spending, bringing money home to their constituents. But the funny thing here is that the Democrats are skirting around their own rule.
Democrats are sidestepping rules approved their first day in power in January to clearly identify “earmarks” – lawmakers’ requests for specific projects and contracts for their states.
This rule they enacted on their first day in congress to show us how ethical they will be, it doesn’t seem ethical to hide the earmarks until it is to late to remove them to me.
As a result, most lawmakers will not get a chance to oppose specific projects as wasteful or questionable when the spending bills for various agencies get their first votes in the full House in June.
As a result of this back alley maneuvering the Democrats have not made congressional spending more open, in fact they have, in effect, snuck in and closed the door behind them.
