New Hampshire, Welcome To The Nanny State 2
This is an opinion piece that appeared in the New Hampshire Union Leader. It reinforces my position that I wrote about in my post titled New Hampshire, Welcome To The Nanny State.
Banning bad stuff: Why stop with cigarettes?
The state Senate on Thursday voted 17-7 to ban smoking in bars and restaurants in New Hampshire. The House will approve the bill, Gov. Lynch will sign it, and the state will turn a corner in its relationship with the people. From this point forward, it becomes easier for the state to intervene to protect residents from themselves, something New Hampshire long has taken pride in not doing.
What next? Well, two legislators already want to ban restaurants from serving food that contains trans fats. That is just one small step away from banning fatty foods all together. Who needs cakes, doughnuts and hamburgers anyway? Humans can survive just fine on fruits and vegetables.
After that, banning drinking in bars and restaurants makes the most sense. Social drinkers can put others’ lives at risk. It happens every weekend. The state can cut down on drunk driving accidents by forbidding people from drinking at bars, nightclubs and restaurants. You might drink too much, and the state can’t take that risk.
Next, lawmakers can ban dancing in bars and restaurants. After all, New York City does it, and we wouldn’t want to fall behind the trendsetters down there.
But why stop at banning things? The state could just as easily mandate good behaviors, too. It can start by requiring motorcycle helmet use, seat belt use, trigger locks and library cards (reading makes you smarter!).
Then the state can move on to bigger issues, like requiring that all boy babies be circumcised. It stymies the spread of AIDS, you know. After that, it can mandate condom use for all unmarried couples (it’s for the public health) and require that everyone use hand sanitizer before touching doorknobs in public places.
There must be thousands of laws the state could pass to make us all safer by controlling what we do once we set foot outside our homes. Who knew?!
Legislators had better get cracking.
Every second they wait to tell us what to do is another second in which the rest of us are vulnerable to making dumb decisions that might hurt us and others.
Murtha’s “Slow Bleed” Stumbles Out Of The Gate

Murtha Stumbles on Iraq Funding Curbs
Democrats Were Ill-Prepared for Unplanned Disclosure, Republican Attacks
By Jonathan Weisman and Lyndsey Layton

The plan was bold: By tying President Bush’s $100 billion war request to strict standards of troop safety and readiness, Democrats believed they could grab hold of Iraq war policy while forcing Republicans to defend sending troops into battle without the necessary training or equipment.
But a botched launch by the plan’s author, Rep. John P. Murtha (Pa.), has united Republicans and divided Democrats, sending the latter back to the drawing board just a week before scheduled legislative action, a score of House Democratic lawmakers said last week. Read more…
Don’t Overlook Sam Brownback
Here is another little known Republican candidate that may deserve a closer look. I definitely like the lesser knowns in this race(Duncan Hunter and Mike Huckabee are the other two) better than the big three. Maybe it’s just because I don’t know them as well as the others, but if they perform well in the debates maybe one of them would be a better option.

Sam Brownback Seeks Winning Niche As Bleeding Heart Right- Winger
By ADAM C. SMITH
Sam Brownback may be the most interesting and foolishly overlooked candidate in the crowded presidential field.
How many politicians can be a hero to antiabortion activists, and also work well with liberals like Ted Kennedy and the late Paul Wellstone to accomplish his compassionate conservative agenda?
Unlike the front-runners, the second-term Kansas senator opposes President Bush’s troop “surge” in Iraq. He is campaigning first and foremost as a social conservative, but he also has impeccable credentials as a tax-cutting economic conservative. Read more…
Shame On You Chuck Schumer

For Shame, Chuck
February 25, 2007 — Capitol Hill Democrats have finally adopted a military strategy: They’ve declared a war of attrition against President Bush’s policy in Iraq.
The non-binding resolutions denouncing the troop surge in Baghdad and Anbar Province were the first feint. Now Democrats are launching phase two: an attempt to “de-certify” the war by effectively nullifying the 2002 congressional authorization for the use of military force against Saddam Hussein. Dick Cheney vs Nancy Pelosi 2
![]()
WASHINGTON — Vice President Dick Cheney refused Friday to take back his charge that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi‘s opposition to President Bush’s Iraq war buildup is playing into the hands of the Al Qaeda terrorist network.
“If you’re going to advocate a course of action that basically is withdrawal of our forces from Iraq, then you don’t get to just do the fun part of that, that says, ‘We’ll, we’re going to get out,’ and appeal to your constituents on that basis,” Cheney said.
The vice president had voiced the same criticism of Pelosi earlier this week during a visit to Japan, and the California Democrat accused the vice president of questioning her patriotism, saying she was going to call President Bush directly with her complaint.
“I hope the president will repudiate and distance himself from the vice president’s remarks,” Pelosi said. She ended up talking with White House chief of staff Josh Bolten instead of Bush.
The long-distance quarrel began in Tokyo, where Cheney earlier this week used an interview to criticize Pelosi and Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., over their plan to place restrictions on Bush’s request for an additional $93 billion for the Iraq war to make it difficult or impossible to send 21,500 extra troops to Iraq.
During Friday’s interview in Sydney, Cheney said, “I’m not sure what part of it is that Nancy disagreed with. She accused me of questioning her patriotism. I didn’t question her patriotism. I questioned her judgment.”
“You also have to be accountable for the results. What are the consequences of that? What happens if we withdraw from Iraq?,” he said. “And the point I made and I’ll make it again is that al-Qaida functions on the basis that they think they can break our will. That’s their fundamental underlying strategy, that if they can kill enough Americans or cause enough havoc, create enough chaos in Iraq, then we’ll quit and go home. And my statement was that if we adopt the Pelosi policy, that then we will validate the strategy of al-Qaida. I said it and I meant it.”
Asked if he was willing to take back his criticism of Pelosi, Cheney replied, “I’m not backing down.”
The Lying Clintons
From realclearpolitics.com:
Geffen & the Truth-Challenged Clintons
Whatever the mighty Clinton spin machine is saying about the front-page catfight between Hillary, Barack Obama and David Geffen, the fact is, the Geffen-Obama forces put a big hurt on the presidential aspirations of the former first lady.
This brouhaha blossomed when Geffen, the left-wing media mogul, told New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, “Everybody in politics lies, but (the Clintons) do it with such ease, it’s troubling.” He said a lot more that was derogatory specifically to Hillary Clinton, but that’s the key statement, since Geffen is obviously referring to both Clintons. After all, it was Hillary who enabled Bill’s lies time and again. Now, America is being told — and by a former Clinton benefactor, no less — that there’s more where that came from.
Geffen’s shot across the bow, with its huge media echo chamber, reminds folks what it was like when the Clintons were in the White House. Geffen has single-handedly pried the lid off the rusty old can of Clinton lies, reminding voters of what will happen if this truth-challenged couple ever returns to the Oval Office.
Does the American electorate want to go through this all over again? Have we forgotten the lies?
Go Google the simple phrase “Bill Clinton lies.” When I do so, this is what I quickly turn up (and from various sources):
— Clinton lied under oath to a federal grand jury. (That’s perjury, of course, and perjury remains a felony.)
— Clinton continues to lie about his 12-year affair with Gennifer Flowers.
— Clinton still denies he sexually harassed Paula Jones. (Even though he paid her $850,000 in hush money.)
— Clinton persists in dismissing the Whitewater scandal as a “land deal where I lost money” (despite the fact that a dozen of his close associates landed in jail over the matter).
— Clinton illegally obtained FBI files on his political opponents and lied about that, too.
— On the golf course, Clinton has an incredibly difficult time playing his ball where it lies. According to close observers (Tiger Woods among them), Clinton exhibits questionable math when he tallies his scorecard.
— And according to Washington Post reporter John Harris, Clinton was so upset about his inability to lose weight in 2000 that following his annual physical he instructed aides to release a bogus number that made him five pounds lighter.
David Geffen also has turned our attention back to the days of the Lincoln bedroom scandal, when White House sleepovers were regularly offered in exchange for large political contributions. I could be wrong, but I don’t recall a single instance of this happening while George W. Bush has been in office. Same for Bush Sr. and Ronald Reagan. For that matter, I don’t recall any Lincoln bedroom sales during the presidencies of Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford or Richard Nixon.
Just the Bill Clinton presidency.
It is highly ironic that the very liberal Geffen has put all this front and center. It seems that Geffen is still jilted by the fact that President Clinton failed to pardon Leonard Peltier, an American Indian activist who was convicted and sent to jail for killing two FBI agents. I’m speculating here, but the “ultimate” lie may have been that Clinton promised Geffen a pardon for Peltier, reneged on the deal and instead pardoned Marc Rich, the currency manipulator and money launderer who is the husband of Clinton pal Denise Rich, who is also a suspected Clinton paramour. The trigger for Geffen’s Hillary insurrection, and the bile-filled remarks he served to Maureen Dowd, may have been lingering resentment.
Everyone’s attempting to call this fight. Geffen, of course, is now solidly in the Obama camp, and he’s bringing his rich Hollywood pals with him. As for Obama, his alleged sin is that he won’t reprimand Geffen, as the Hillary camp demands. As a conservative with no skin in this Democratic game, I’d have to say the Geffen episode has bloodied Hillary’s nose much more than Obama’s.
Why?
Because David Geffen, unwittingly or not, reminded voters of the moral impoverishment and constant chicanery of the old Clinton White House.
Do voters really want to watch this low-grade C movie once more?
I’ve always believed that the Clinton White House past would be Hillary’s biggest problem in the future. Now, suddenly, it’s been put into the campaign in startling Hollywood Technicolor.

Why We Are Losing The Public Opinion War
The Democrats have been relentless in telling us how bad the Iraq war is going. How we can’t win, it was a mistake to go there. We are constantly bonbarded with the death toll and negative stories. When was the last time you saw a story on the heroic actions of our soldiers. I’m sure there are plenty.
The problem is our president isn’t out there publically every day biting his lower lip, pouting, and telling us how much he feels our soldier’s pain the way Bill Clinton would. Bill Clinton was a master of manipulation, he would be in the public eye every day during this war if he were president. Telling us what we wanted to hear and the media would play along.
President Bush doesn’t do that, so he emits the feeling that he doesn’t care, and the left and the media are able to play off this.
Below is an interesting article about this very idea, it is from nationalreview.com:
A Failure to Communicate
And one last chance to win the war of ideas in Iraq.
By Clifford D. May
In Iraq, we have been losing not clashes of arms but clashes of perceptions. Our enemies understood early on that they could not defeat American troops in combat. But they were clever enough to realize they didn’t need to. Instead, they could win a war of ideas.
Their strategy was audacious: They would target their enemies — “occupiers,” “infidels,” and “collaborators” — only opportunistically and sporadically. Their most lethal weapon, the suicide bomber, they would deploy against ordinary Iraqis shopping in the market, waiting on line for jobs, sitting in cafes.
One might have expected the fabled “Arab Street” to erupt over the slaughter of fellow Arabs. It did not do so. Muslims around the world ought to have been furious over seeing their co-religionists killed in cold blood. They were not.
Nor were Europeans outraged at the mass murder of innocents. On the contrary, many expressed something close to admiration for what they persisted in calling the “Resistance.”
The media, for their part, were not diligent in reporting on the affiliations, motives, and strategies of the killers — whom they referred to as “insurgents” or “militants” or something equally nonjudgmental. They talked about “the violence,” and the “security situation” — as though the cause of the bloodshed was not specific individuals, groups and regimes but a force of nature, like a hurricane or a tornado.
The White House, the Pentagon, and the State Department allowed this spin to go almost unchallenged — and eventually to become the dominant “narrative.” What could they have done instead? They could have made the truthful case — forcefully and relentlessly — that ruthless fanatics were intentionally killing innocent Iraqis; that civilized people do not excuse such barbarism, no matter the cause or grievance; that principled people fight and defeat it.
On a BBC radio show, an interviewer asked if I agreed that the situation in Iraq was dire: I said I thought it was: Iraqi non-combatants — men, women and children — are being murdered by the score. So surely, I added, the one thing we must not do is turn the country over to those dispatching the killers.
Startled, he suggested that the presence of Americans was responsible for the violence. I asked him to be more precise: Is it the sight of Americans that causes people to kill one another? Or is it perhaps our smell?
A second and also cunning aspect of the anti-American/anti-Iraqi strategy has been to stoke sectarian fires, knowing that Americans would not want to be caught in a civil war. A year ago this month, the Golden Mosque in Samara — the holiest Shia shrine in Iraq — was bombed. It was a stroke of tactical brilliance. Once again, international outrage at the predators was muted (nothing like the protests in response, for example, to Israeli attempts to repair a ramp near the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem). But Iraqi Shia, until then restrained despite repeated attacks, turned to militias both to protect them and to take revenge against what they saw as their complicit Sunni neighbors.
Having lost so many clashes of perceptions, the U.S. has now had to change its strategy for the clash of arms. Under a new commander, Gen. David Petraeus, American forces are not just training Iraqi forces to “stand up so Americans can stand down,” they are actually attempting to provide security to the residents of Baghdad, to clear out the terrorists and keep them out.
To accomplish that will require sophisticated counter-insurgency techniques — a subject on which Petraeus has literally written the book. But beyond making progress, Petraeus will need to show progress through the media to the world: a terrorist cell eliminated, a weapons cache seized, a torture chamber located, a neighborhood stabilized, a market teeming with people no longer afraid they won’t survive the afternoon. Purple fingers once a year will not suffice.
The enemy knows what it has to do in response: Litter the streets of Baghdad with bodies. If the dead are Americans, that’s a bulls-eye. But if they are just ordinary Iraqis heading for work or taking their children to school or buying rice for dinner that can be spun as a victory, too. The “international community” will direct its anger not at the killers but at those brave enough to stand up to them. Is that not perverse, illogical and immoral? Is it not insane? Of course it is. But most people won’t understand why until and unless the White House, the Pentagon and the State Department learn to wage a more effective war of ideas.

Global Warming Myth Busting 2
Below is an article from nationalreview.com. Why is it accepted as fact that global warming is a scientifically proven fact? It is not. The mainstream media doesn’t even bother to show the dissenting side of this issue, they just push the agenda. It’s all about big government, and government control. They are teaching our children that this is fact, indoctrinating them into this green lifestyle all for more government taxes and restrictions. We need to protect our children from this farce and stop the insanity that is the global warming hysteria.

Inconvenient Truths
Novel science fiction on global warming.
By Patrick J. Michaels
This Sunday, Al Gore will probably win an Academy Award for his global-warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth, a riveting work of science fiction.
The main point of the movie is that, unless we do something very serious, very soon about carbon dioxide emissions, much of Greenland’s 630,000 cubic miles of ice is going to fall into the ocean, raising sea levels over twenty feet by the year 2100.

There’s nothing like a celebrity sing-a-long to get the global warming juices boiling. Al Gore, the vice president who became a midway barker, has the greatest show on earth, maybe even the universe. He’s offering a day of “Live Earth” concerts during the summer that will include musical artists and “thought leaders” such as Cameron Diaz, Snoop Dog and Enrique Iglesias. Hea-veee, as the kids used to say. Read more…
Kyoto Treaty Farce
From americanthinker.com:
As Went the Dodo so Will Kyoto
By Marc Sheppard
February has been a tough month for Global Warming doomsayers. First, their cataclysmic worst-case scenarios were debunked by the IPCC, which cut its own 2001 projections for temperature increase by a third and sea level rise completely in half. Then, just five days later, they learned that the environmentally irresponsible U.S was actually doing a better job of cutting CO2 emissions than their Kyoto-signing European Union heroes. And to top it off, attendees of a February 16th DC meeting of GLOBE nations agreed to abandon their adored Kyoto’s economy-killing, energy-rationing, short-range, mandatory CO2 targets in favor of more realistic long-term goals.
