Gunrunner: Eric Holder requests documents from Darrell Issa

August 18, 2011

Eric Holder has tried to downplay Darrell Issa’s Oversight Committee investigation into the Gunrunner scandal by saying that the Office of the Inspector General was conducting its own “independent” investigation into the deadly operation. In order to help the OIG along Eric Holder requested from Darrell Issa the documents related to the secret meeting he conducted with the person Eric Holder tried to make the fall guy–Kenneth Melson.

This makes it sound as if the OIG’s investigation into the Gunrunner scandal isn’t quite as independent as Eric Holder and the DOJ would have us believe. Why would Eric Holder be making the request on behalf of the OIG when the OIG is supposed to be investigating the DOJ’s role in the scandal? Shouldn’t the OIG be making this request if they indeed want to see the documents?

Since the OIG is supposed to be conducting an independent inquiry, it seems odd that the Department would make a document request on behalf of that office,” Grassley and Issa wrote to Holder on Tuesday. “We presume that if the OIG would like to make such a request, it is capable of doing so on its own initiative. However, we have not received any such request from the OIG

Here is what we know about this so far: the OIG is conducting an “independent” investigation into the Gunrunner scandal as well as Eric Holder’s DOJ involvement in the scandal. The OIG has not requested the documents related to Kenneth Melson’s testimony before the Oversight Committee, but Eric Holder has requested these documents on the behalf of the OIG. Eric Holder tried to make Kenneth Melson the fall guy for the operation and tried to prevent Melson from testifying in front of the Oversight Committee, but Kenneth Melson refused to resign because he wanted his chance to testify in front of the Oversight Committee. Kenneth Melson eventually got the chance to testify in front of the committee and he did so with his own personal lawyers so that he could speak his mind freely and without hinderance from DOJ appointed lawyers. And now Eric Holder wants access to Kenneth Melson’s testimony.

Eric Holder tried to silence Kenneth Melson and he tried to control Kenneth Melson’s testimony but he was unable to do so and now it appears as if he is trying to gain access to Melson’s testimony in an attempt to coordinate his story moving forward and he is doing it under the guise of  helping an “independent” investigation which suddenly doesn’t seem so independent after all.

We also recently learned that three of the supervisors who were directly involved in the deadly scandal were promoted and it seems to me that the only realistic reason for these promotions in the midst of this investigation that this was a payoff for their silence on the scandal moving forward.

Now that Eric Holder believes the ATF has bought the silence of these three supervisors he needs to gain access to Kenneth Melson’s testimony in case he is ever called in front of Darrell Issa’s Oversight Committee and he actually thought that Darrell Issa was stupid enough to fall for this tactic.

There is no doubt in my mind that Eric Holder was behind Operation Gunrunner from the very beginning and he is running scared because the walls are closing in around him; this appears to be a desperate act from a desperate man who is clinging onto his position by a thread. The more he tries to cover this up the deeper he gets and if his involvement in the scandal wasn’t bad enough to land him behind bars his attempts at covering it up should be.

Doesn’t it just make you wonder what Issa will find if he keeps digging?

What in the world are they waiting for to call a special prosecutor? I haven’t studied the Watergate scandal and I was just a kid when that happened so I’m not as ‘up’ on it as maybe I should be, but it sure seems to me that this is turning into a much larger scandal that Watergate…if it’s not already bigger!

It is much bigger in my opinion. Watergate was a B&E while this led to the murder of at least one American. I don’t know what they are waiting for to call in a special prosecutor but I think they want to make sure they have all the info they can get before they do so.

There is a great deal of deception going on here Steve. Issa had better start locking things down and getting to the bottom of this because the rats are scurrying around. If he doesn’t get a handle on this soon, they just might slip through the cracks. This needs to change into a criminal investigation…end of story.

Exactly John, there is no doubt that there was criminal activity here, if not during the program than at least in the coverup.

I guess I am starting to understand the reason for the financial meltdown. It removes all other stories from the news. Mission accomplished it appears.

Yep, it provided a bit of cover for Obama. You have to wonder if this new amnesty andle is also a diversion.

They are trying to discredit Issa because they know how close he is to unraveling this crime. Issa has fired back, calling this a hit piece, he isn’t go to let anything stop him.

According to one of my friends in D.C., Eric Holder does what he’s told – his request is most likely coming from Valerie Jarrett, Obama’s Chief of Staff. She is the real power behind the throne and will figure the right ‘deflection’ response once they have that testimony in hand.

Hannity has a special on fast and furious tonight at 9 on fox, I am sure nothing new will be broke but its good to see some prime time exposure. I would think the main stream will have to start covering this HUGE scandal sooner or later. How much egg will they have on their faces if and when indictments come down?

I just saw this comment now so I missed the special, how was it? Sooner or later the media will have to cover it, right?

I saw about half of this show yesterday afternoon and while there wasn’t much new information we have to remember that the vast majority of Americans don’t know anything about this story so any exposure it gets will help.

It looks like Issa is going to have to shovel his way through a lot dirt before he gets to the bottom of this mess.

When the going gets rough, they just have another crisis so look for one coming. I hope that Rep. Issa sticks to his guns along with Sen. Grassley. This is truly a corrupt administration. I do think alot of Congress is there for “the good of the nation”, but I believe they are fewer and fewer. This was a manipulated undercover op from the start and I am sure it goes all the way to the top. I know the need for all that info is to do damage control, that is evident. Can they cover this one, I don’t know. Hannity’s program was ok, but they still don’t get to most the public. If it is allowed to happen, then look for more of the same. Apparently, we are not that smart as far as the higher ups are concerned. I don’t take anything at face value anymore, I cannot afford that luxury. There is plenty of dirt here to shovel thru, as the above post said, I only hope Rep. Issa is not going to fall for anything they say about him. For some reason, he does give me a bit of hope.

Think simply about the law. IF you were to decide I don’t like being out of money so I am just going down to the bank and rob it. HOW long do you think it would take them to arrest you.
YOU decided not to obey the law and got arrested your crime of theft was simply about money. Now think about this, the gunrunner scandal was NOT just a BATF operation, there were no less than 6 governmental departments involved. DHS, department of homeland security, DEA, drug enforcement agency, BATF, Bureau of alcohol tobacco and firearms, CIA,
Central intelligence agency, Border patrol and the state department. There is ABSOLUTELY no way to coordinate this many departments without ALL heads of said departments having FULL disclosure of the project. This was from the beginning a horrendous and DELIBERATE
breach of our laws EACH of these departments stated DUTIES are to UPHOLD our laws. An AMERICAN citizen and MANY Mexican citizens were MURDERED by this BLATANT violaton of our law. You simply robbed a bank you go to jail, THEY deliberately circumvented federal and international law and hat happens? OOPS I sorry I quit, is that ok. AND to put icing on the cake OUR top law enforcement agent, Mr Eric (I wont prosecute my people) Holder is stonewalling and REFUSING to produce documents requested by congress. Yes he did produce documents BUT they were so redacted as to be WORTHLESS with was the whole point. In other words he personally is hindering a congressional investigation. Yet he remains a FREE man. Two ways this should go, IF he AND the other department heads didn’t know (very highly unlikely) prosecuted for GROSS negligence and fired with NO percs. If they did know prosecuted for complicity in breaking a federal law AND murder.

Glad to see you are on the same track as the rest of us, Montie. I think you pretty much summed it up. There is more than enough blame to go around to numerous departments. The problem is, they shuffle people around and shove them somewhere else to lie low until the heat is off. I don’t think this time it is going to work, do you? I think they stepped into it big time. They overstepped their bounds, as they say. I also think that if they can prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they should be hit with everything they can be. Take every one of them down and put in some people that can do the job legally. This has been a problem for awhile, it didn’t just start up. We know that it became worse when the Chicago Way shows up at the WH. I live in Illinois, I know how the game is played, it is just now on a much larger scale.
