Illinois Schools ban Christmas, but Muslims are Allowed to Pray in School

October 2, 2007

Well, it is just the beginning of October and I really don’t want to begin thinking about Christmas yet. However, I just saw this article about a school district in Illinois that is banning the terms Christmas and Halloween, and now I have to write about it, I can’t help myself.

southwest suburban school district has taken action, responding to the concerns of a Muslim parent.
For now, children in Ridgeland School District 122 will celebrate fall festival instead of Halloween and winter festival instead of Christmas.

One Muslim parent complained about Christmas and now they are capitulating to the parent. Once again we are protecting the rights of the minority in a situation and to hell with the rights of the majority. Don’t try to tell me that it is because of the separation of church and state ( which isn’t in the constitution) because it is not. You see this school district allows Muslim students to PRAY IN SCHOOL. That’s right, if you are a Muslim you can pray in school, if you are Christian, you can’t even say the word Christmas.

The superintendent says the reason for the change in tradition comes after one parent wanted Ramadan decorations put up inside Columbus Manor Elementary. They were taken down.

Superintendent Tom Smyth said, “I go back to our policy which says that public schools are to remain neutral in this respect.”

Meantime, Muslim children are being allowed to pray during what’s being called their own time, that’s lunch time, during Ramadan.

Parent June Quigley said, “They get to pray in our schools. That is religion in a public school.”

America is losing her culture bit by bit to political correctness. We no longer require immigrants to learn the language, we have to be understanding and caring to their culture, the culture that was so good they left it to come here. And Americans are constantly being told they cannot have public displays of their religion, or pray in public schools unless your religion is a politically correct religion such as Islam.

America is losing the battle from within, we are being torn apart by political correctness and we must wake up or face the fact that America as we currently know her is doomed. We are constantly losing the freedom of speech to political correctness, and we are losing the freedom of religion to political correctness.

We need to teach immigrants to learn and accept American culture before we lose our culture.

The clock is ticking, we need to WAKE UP AMERICA.

Steve, I heard an interview with that Muslim mother this morning on the news and she said it wasn’t her intention to stop the children from celebrating Christmas and Haloween but that she should have the right to display Ramadan decorations. The news reported that the school committee had a late night meeting and voted to not stop the children from celebrating halloween and Christmas in school. It once again amazes how the liberal media outlets spins the truth. It sounded too good to be true…thank you for reporting the truth.

I think that Christians need to take the Muslim approach and simply start adding “or else” to things. We celebrate Christmas or else.

Seriously though, this is a very disturbing trend. I am bothered to no end by the assault on Christmas (happy holidays my ass) and now that we are being handed a double standard when it comes to religious expression I’ve gone from bothered to outraged.

You are so right. America needs to wake up and start addressing these things head on before we loose it completely. If nothing else, err on the conservative side and simply say no to everybody. It might make some people cranky but at least nobody can say they were discriminated against. However, my first choice would be to give them the finger and tell them to chill out because here in AMERICA we celebrate Christmas.

Email I sent to one of the numerous companies that wish you a Happy Holiday, and then try to sell you something:

“Sorry, I don’t buy from companies that celebrate a generic and meaningless ‘Holiday’ instead of the hallowed and traditional ‘Christmas’. Here’s something I wrote for you though – and it’s free! (And isn’t that what Christmas is all about?) You can sing along to the tune of John Lennon’s Happy Christmas (War Is Over).”

    Happy Holiday (Christmas Is Over)

    So this is a Holiday
    And what have you done
    A festive tradition
    Is under the gun
And so this is a Holiday
    It means nothing to me
    The Holiday carols
    The Holiday tree

    A very merry Holiday
    But what’s it all for
    Appease the extremists
    And spend at the store

    Afraid to say Christmas
    Too scared you’ll offend
    Intolerant people
    Want Christmas to end
And so this is a Holiday
    For black and for white
    For yellow and red ones
    They know it’s not right

    A very merry Holiday
    And a happy New Year
    Let’s hope it’s a good one
    Not driven by fear

    So this is a Holiday
    And what have you done
    You’ve censored our Christmas
    Forsaken God’s Son
And so this is a Holiday
    Although not for some
    Now stores can stay open
    Extend Holiday fun

    A very merry Holiday
    And a happy New Year
    Let’s resurrect Christ
    Bring back Christmas cheer

    Christmas is over
    If you want it
    Christmas is over
    Now…

I know just How you feel. When I was little I saw that all schools were decked with such Christmas cheer. Now what I see is discrimination. Christians are not allowed to pray in school, wear the crucifix, or read the Bible. The muslims (who may I remind you are totally driving the Christians insane) can pray to that stupid false idol of theirs, where that stupid thing on their head or even ask the school menus be changed to fit their standards.
America was founded on Christianity and that is the way it needs to stay. I totally agree with you Murray. Christmas needs to find its way back here now. Anyone affended can just leave America and never come back!

I am glad yo feel the same way as I do. I wish everyone in the world would just excep Jesus as their savior. These biblical events are true. The bible is a non fictional book. Everything in that holy book happened. I am tired of being told no because a muslim student was affended. Please help me fight these people and help them realize that Jesus died for them to. to anyone reading this message always tell yourself ” I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I think that you have completely misinterpreted the issue. This issue is with the school- a government establishment- addressing the holidays and effectively promoting them. If a Christian student wishes to pray in school, wear a crusifix, or even attempt to engage peers in religious disscussion outside of class they have every right to do so. Muslims share that same right to express their prayers and religion, free from the school endorsing one type of prayer over another. That is freedom. I think you would be singing a different tune were your children asked to have a ramadan celebration in their classroom.

The truth of the matter is that the whole “separation of church and state” thing has been blown so far out of control that most people don’t even know what it means any longer.

The separation was simply intended to prevent a theocracy from ever being established. It was never meant to keep schools of any other government institutions from recognizing, acknowledging or celebrating religious holidays or practices. It simply mean that at no time would the US government say that one religion is right and others were wrong.

A school should be free to celebrate a holiday so long as they don’t say that they are right and those who don’t go along with it are wrong. What we are dealing with right now is political correctness run amok – not the separation of church and state. It is simply a drive to make sure that nobody feels offended or left out of something. This is nothing more than a bastardization of a clause that was put forth for a completely different reason than it is being used for today.

“For God So loved the world that he gave his one and only son, and whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his sone into the world to condemn the world but to save the world through him” John 3:16-17
I was handing out homemade Christmas cards to my teachers with a small religious christmas message. I worked on those cards for two weeks. I was later called into the assistant principals office and told very nicely that I have violated a federal law. He said that it is against the law to spread the Christian religion word(the Bible) around schools. I was given detention for three days and almost got I.S.S for this.
I feel very very bad for the little children suffering through this ban as well. One of the parents used to dress up as Santa at Christmas time and go into the kintergarden classrooms and play with the kids. The principal of the school had that parent suspended from school grounds for an entire school year. She said this was religious and not allowed anywhere in public schools.
I have done it all for defending the religion that America was founded on. I have missed fun activities, sat in detention, and even almost got ISS.
I wish one day I would get my way again. I want to see the young kids playing with holiday toys, and talking to “Santa”.
This ban on Christmas in public schools is downright stupid. If I was a teacher I would put up a nativity set on my desk, hang lights around the room, and play religious Christmas music in the room. I am not giving up because “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. Who’s with me?!

I totally agree with you. It’s very sad that America has come to this. However, don’t forget that it was Jesus who said to submit to the law of the land. Just a thought.

I’m a Christian, and I completely agree that this issue is wrong. However, as I was reading your article, I couldn’t help but be distracted by a key detail that was incorrect. You said that the separation of church and state is not in the constitution. Well, actually it is. The constitution directly states that the government should not have any say within the church. This was done so that ALL people might have religious freedom. I’m just a high school senior that is in the middle of a government class, so it automatically caught my attention.

The constitution states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Nowhere in the constitution does the term “separation of church and state” appear. That term came from a letter that Jefferson sent to the Danbury Baptists in 1802. The Baptists were worried that their religion was going to be banned, Jefferson assured them it would not. Somehow the liberals have managed to take that letter and use it do do exactly what Jefferson said wouldn’t happen–banning religious symbols.

This page is entirely ignorant of historical fact. To not think that the consitution declares a separation of church and state is to not have ever looked at it, and an insult to those who created it. Since religion is the exact opposite of education (since you require no evience or proof to believe the insane things that fall under “faith”), no religion or religious banter should be allowed in any educational forrum. You are correct that the country is being lost, but it is being lost to the moron religious people of all faiths. We know why crops die, we know why eclipses happen, we know the sun does not revolve around the earth, its time to stop containing our laughter when someone tell us that they are a person of faith. It is not a virtue to be admired, its a discusting waste of a persons time and potential.

      “the koran is evil”
From there Elisha went up to Bethel. While he was on his way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him. “Go up baldhead,” they shouted, “go up baldhead!” The prophet turned and saw them, and he cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two shebears came out of the woods and tore forty two of the children to pieces. (2 Kings 2:23-24 NAB)

“they treat their woman like rabid animals”

If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

Koran and Bible, two books, equally barbaric.
