New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman on Ron Paul: “He’s got Potential”

November 7, 2007

 Cross posted on Grizzly Groundswellronpaul.jpg

After hearing about Ron Paul’s one day internet fundraising effort of $4.3 million dollars, New Hampshire Republican Party chairman Fergus Cullen had this to say about Ron Paul:

New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman Fergus Cullen said Paul has the potential to upend the early primaries with a third- or fourth-place finish in the state, above some of the candidates who are expected to be among the top contenders.

“He’s got potential because there is a segment of the Republican electorate that is opposed to the war and is maybe anti-internationalist,” Cullen said.

I have been of the opinion lately that Ron Paul is surging up in the New Hampshire voter’s minds as a viable Republican candidate. The latest New Hampshire poll had Ron Paul in fourth place, the first time he has polled that high here in New Hampshire. I am beginning to wonder if the voters of New Hampshire are so disgruntled with the liberal Democrats that got swept into power in the last disastrous election that they are now looking in the exact opposite direction, hence my perceived surge in the popularity of Ron Paul. I have a feeling he may finish higher than fourth place in the New Hampshire primary.

There is a little precedence for something like this as recently as 1996:

Pat Buchanan used an isolationist message and opposition to international trade deals to win the 1996 Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire.

Pat Buchanan at the time of the 1996 primary was polling very low before he won the New Hampshire primary. Of course he wasn’t able to build this into any type of momentum and lost the nomination to Bob Dole, but it shows us that New Hampshire may return an unexpected result.

As I hinted at earlier, I feel as though New Hampshire voters are fed up with the result of the election of 2006. In 2006, New Hampshire voters gave Democrats control over every branch of state government for the first time in over 100 years. The results have been horrific for the usually independent, small government, non nanny state, able to think for themselves residents of New Hampshire and I feel as though we are ready for a change. I have a feeling that those disenchanted with our liberal governor are beginning to do a 180 and may be ready to vote for someone they feel is a strict constitutionalist.

I sense something happening in New Hampshire, I can’t prove it but I feel it, and I think Ron Paul is going to surprise people here.

Just for the record, I will not be voting for Ron Paul, I am not schilling for Ron Paul, I am just trying to share a feeling that I am getting from New Hampshire voters.

Pat Robertson is supporting a Rudy? Man that’s got to hurt… That is exactly like Rush giving a DARE talk…. I bet you that endorsement not only alienates the conservative Christians. The real tragedy is the late night talks shows have no writers.

    ROTFLMAO

    Snake Hunters sez,

The Democrats have dopey Dennis Kucinich.
G.O.P. has Ron Paul. Twiddle-Dee, Tweedle Dumb.
Both are loose cannons on a slippery deck.

Dennis is intent on sinking the Liberty Ship, and
Ron Paul is unconcerned that Iran is enriching U-235.

We have been at war with Iran since Nov 4, 1979.
    Hillary, Giuliani & Romney know what’s going on;
the rest are concerned about winning (an election).

Extremism, in the Defense of Liberty, is no vice.
Divided, we hesitate; let’s get it done! reb

“We have been at war with Iran since Nov 4, 1979.

Are you serious? Hillary voted for the Patriot Act, for the Autorization for use of force in Iraq, and now she claims Bush made her do it – leadership potential = 0

Giuliani = 9/11, 9/11, oh – and did I mention the Justice Department says that crime decreased across the nation in the exact same percentage as the ‘decrease’ in crime for NY (by the way 9/11, 9/11).

Romney, well at least he has the approval of 7 major Evangelical leaders in addition to the mormon vote. I don’t know what MA citizens would do without a law that assesses fines for not buying their own health insurance (if laws against being uninsured are the same as universal health care – you found you man).

Get a grip – Vote for a true grassroots champion; vote for Ron Paul.

Ralph: You note that “Dennis is intent on sinking the Liberty Ship”. Didn’t you know that the U.S.S. Liberty was sunk by Israeli jets on June 8, 1967? I guess you meant something else, as the intentional sinking of the U.S.S. Liberty was not condemned by the then C-in-C who was busy with his “War on Poverty”, just as our present C-in-C is busy with his “War on Terror”.

Disinter, I wasn’t calling Paul an isolationist, I was just using Buchanan as an example of how you never know in New Hampshire. Sometimes an underdog performs very well here. That was how the comparison was meant.

I promise that if the polls would actually include Ron Paul he would be polling top three. Their questions always start “Which of the four frontrunning candidates will you be voting for?” The choices they give? Giuliani, Romney, Mcaine, and Thompson. THEN they say “other”. I would believe in America again if Ron Paul became president.

I gotta tell you it is a sad state of affairs when Ron Paul is doing this well anywhere. He has no prayer of getting the Republican nomination but my fear is he will run on a 3rd party ticket and take enough votes away from the Republican to basically hand Hillary the presidency. He doesn’t even need to run on a 3rd party ticket… his devotees will either not vote or write him in..

    FYI Dsinter
I don’t care what he says about not being an isolationist but a non-interventionist… he is both.. part of the definition of isolationism is: “remain at peace by avoiding foreign entanglements and responsibilities. ” That in my mind is non-intervention.

Ron Paul can win as a third party candidate. He’ll get the pro life vote on the Republican side and the anti-war vote from the democrats.

I can’t comprehend people who voted for Bush when he ran on an anti nation building/ humble foreign policy platform who are now willing to discard all of their principles to vote for an anti second amendment, pro abortion, pro gay marriage candidate like Giuliani just for the opportunity to get crushed by Hillary in the general election. There’s no reason to walk the plank just to be bull headed. Eventually we will leave Iraq and what happens will be up to the Iraqis. We are only prolonging the inevitible and we simply can’t afford to stay any longer. Even those who supported the war must surely realize our work there is done. The goal was to get rid of Saddam Hussein and the threat he posed to us. What we are doing now is precisely what Bush said he would not do- Nation build.

80% of the public opposes the war. The only way for the Republicans to win the whitehouse is to nominate Ron Paul.

As a bonus they get a limited government, free trade, pro-lifer who will obey the constitution, protect our borders, and restore fiscal responsibility to our out of control government.

    To incognito-

It doesn’t really matter what “in your mind” constitutes an isolationist. There is a reality that is apparently beyond your grasp. Ron Paul is for free trade with all and no entangling alliances. That is precisely what Thomas Jefferson recommended. Our only responsibility to the outside world is not to stick our nose where it doesn’t belong.

You may not be NH residents. You are U.S. citizens and Veterans give their lives for citizens no matter what state they come from. NH has violated the law and Constitution to inflict pain and suffering on my family and me because I volunteer my time to help a Madbury NH family that the selectmen openly brag about destroying residents they do not think belong in their town. I had never met this family before they became so desperate they asked for my help because of a letter to the editor that I wrote. I do not even live in Madbury NH. I am 100% disabled. I was injured three times during my tour. Twice during combat related missions during the Vietnam Conflict. My PTSD was diagnosed only this past year because I never talked about my experiences until I wrote a book and they became public. I have relived my Convoy’s as an American Advisor and my first kill every day since my return in 74. I just never believe any one needed to know the dirty parts of a conflict. We as veterans are not fighting for you (people we do not know) we are fighting for our nation and the freedom it brings.
I do not ask people to put them selves in harms way. What Veteran’s give the U.S. can never be explained. What we did and the lives we lived over there is not possible for you that have never served to conceive. When newspapers and media feel that the words of a disabled veteran being tortured by the NH courts and government to silence his free speech is not worth informing the public we as a free nation no longer exist. I have violated no laws. What I ask people to do is talk about me to your elected officials, letters to your editor or blogs, I continue to help this Madbury family because they could be any of you. Freedom is worth fighting for and I can not let what so many Veterans that gave over the history of the U.S. be diminished by illegal government acts.
I use the RD blog because I used them as a crutch during my tour. If you Google my name and Lee NH you can read my letters in full. Peter Macdonald Sgt USMC Semper Fi
