New Hampshire Gun Shops Can’t Keep Ammunition in Stock

April 6, 2009

Gun sales have gone through the roof since last November as people who are worried about the president’s second amendment position has them buying guns before it is too late.

Gun shop owners have reported that they have not been able to keep guns on the shelves, but it isn’t only the guns themselves that there is a shortage of. One of the president’s positions on the regulating of guns is to tax the hell out of the ammunition, make it too expensive for people. Many guns shops are regularly running out of ammunition as people look to stock up before the government increases taxes on the ammunition.

I personally have seen both of these scenarios over and over again here in New Hampshire, where the gun laws are some of the most lenient in the country, and which has been named the safest state in America. When going to any of the local gun shops and perusing the shelves it is amazing how small of a selection there is. To my casual observance it appears that anything over a .32 caliber handgun is hard to come by. The same can be said for the ammunition, every time that you walk into the store you are never sure what they will have in stock for ammunition.

There is a shortage of ammunition across the country and it is because of this president and his second amendment positions. The hardest ammunition to come by are calibers that are the most popular for personal protection.

Right now, the big run is on four particular items: 9mm handgun ammunition, .380-caliber handgun ammunition, .45-caliber handgun ammunition

The fact that so many gun rights advocates are buying anything that they can get their hands on should tell you something about where this president stands on the second amendment. It is ironic that his strict,  I would say radical, position on gun rights is actually having the opposite effect from what he would wish.

This isn’t just some paranoid gun nuts running out and buying weapons in a panic. People are applying for gun permits at record levels, women are buying weapons and applying for permits at record levels as well. There is a reason for this, and there is a reason that stores can’t keep ammunition is stock and it isn’t just paranoia as the media would have you believe. People who never owned guns before are now buying them, these people could hardly be considered gun nuts.

I have written in the past about the plan to serialize ammunition under the Ammo Accountability legislation, this act would force manufacturers to serialize ammunition and would also outlaw reloading. And I have written about states that had legislation pending that would charge a $5 a round tax on anti-personnel ammunition, which is basically a $5 a round tax on all handgun ammunition. With the shortage of ammunition the price of a 50 round box in New Hampshire has risen to about $15, when you add the anti-personnel tax the price becomes $265 for a box of 50 rounds.

Is it any wonder why gun shops can’t keep ammunition is stock?

Am I reading that right? 265? Geesh. I am hoping to get a gun this summer. Don’t need too much ammunition. It’s not just about protection for me and self-defense but about engaging in my second amendment rights.

“The fact that so many gun rights advocates are buying anything that they can get their hands on should tell you something about where this president stands on the second amendment. ”

Actually, it tells you what “gun rights advocates” believe, not where the president stands.

Also, you admit it isn’t just “gun rights advocates”, while trying to claim “it isn’t just paranoia”. Your right, it’s not. It’s fear of what will happen when the economy gets even worse. I’m not a “gun rights advocate”, but I am considering buying a gun, and it’s. And not because of Obama, but because of the poor economy and the increasing likelihood that crime will go up.

I just love it when people claim to know (KNOW! FOR SURE!) exactly why people are taking actions. You can ask them. It’s called a poll.

And yes, it is paranoid to think the president is going to raise the cost of a box of ammo to $265. That is stupid and paranoid. Most gun nuts believe this crap because they have been intellectually abused by the NRA: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/nra_targets_obama.html

Yeah, Obama’s gonna piss off everyone with guns by raising the cost of ammo to $264. That makes sense. Please. Wanna buy a bridge?

I didn’t say the president was going to raise the price of ammo to $265 a box, I clearly said some STATES were considering legislation to tax ammunition at that rate.
But when Obama was running for state senate he signed a survey that stated his positios on the seconed amendment, in thes survey he said that he was for heavy taxes on ammo, banning handguns, and banning CCW. That is what he signed his name to, his campaign admitted it but said that an aide filled out the survey and Obama just signed it. Yeah right. I don’t give a damn what he claimed he believed during the campaign, I know what he signed.

And it is stupid and paranoid to think that the president, or the establishment, would raise the tax on tobacco from $1.10 per pound to $24.78 per pound. Oh wait, he just did. http://www.ttb.gov/main_pages/schip-summary.shtml

What is stupid and naive is to think that just because no president has ever done something, anything, before that this extreme leftie socialist power crazy egomaniac of a president that we are sooo lucky to have now, wont.
Just remember, every right that we willingly surrender makes it that much easier and likely to have the next right taken. And every tax that we allow makes it that much easier to have another one levied against us. Regardless of what you think of tobacco or guns or oil companies or the ultra-rich or anything, what the state can do to them, the state can also do to you.
And by the way, if you believe everything that fact check says is unbiased, you really are naive.

People don’t care when the rights that don’t affect them are under attack, they should. Because as you said it can happen to you. Sooner or later if the government isn’t stopped from over-reaching they will continue to over-reach and eventually get to an issue that does affect the person that didn’t care before.

I am reading Selling Out America’s Democracy by Alan L. Moss and I think this quote by Baron d Montesquieu (1689-1755) is perfect here.

“Democracy requires political virtue, “the love of the laws and of our country.” It requires that private interest be subservient to public interest. For democracy to function according to the public good, citizens must be educated as to their interests and the interests of their country. Democracy falters when its citizens promote their own private agendas at the expense of the needs of their neighbors.”

If that doesn’t say it all….I don’t know what does…

I’ve encountered a similar problem here in Western Missouri. The local Wal-Marts are particularly bereft of 9mm ammo, for months on end. Odd isn’t it?

Of course, Pres. Obama’s latest directive restricting the sale of used DoD ammo brass to re-loaders adds to the problem.

But since the President is such a huge supporter of the second amendment, I simply can’t imagine this being a calculated move.

I totally forgot to mention the brass sale restrictions on the empty shells. Thank you for mentioning it. Two weeks ago I was in the gun shop and the owner said he would love to go into the reloading business, but that the brass and primers were too hard to come by.

Not paranoia, a well justified fear that this president is hell bent on stripping people of their guns. He and his Obamatons have made it abundantly clear that they want nothing more than to repeal the 2nd amendment. God help us all if our Republican representatives don’t find a backbone.

I agree. Judging Obama on the survey that he signed renders a guilty verdict as the most anti second amendment president we have ever had.

I’m trying to find the silver lining amongst all the clouds and I finally found one. If we never have a second revolution, and if we don’t get attacked by the Canadians, and if I don’t have 5,000 people try to break into my home, I should not have to ever buy ammo again for my hunting purposes. I am SO HAPPY!!

Does the president even no what the constitution represents. . . I would say no. This will not prevent the wrong people from having weapons but only infringing on our second amendendment rights to protect our families. Why don’t they just tell the people there is no more democracy in this country. How can a government speak to freedom when all they want to do is take it away.
The people need to take control back and stand up for their rights.
We need another American Revolution or we will be ruled by the iron fist.
Lets make this term the presidents last…………

online ammo suppliers are all out of ammo till mid summer. Texas guns shows are also out of the common pistol and hunting ammo. It is going to worse next year when Nancy Pelosi gets her hands on ammo because Barack Hussein Obamas hands will be tied with his new war in Afganastan and the Economy.

My wife and I are those people who were not into guns AT ALL before the President started in on gun control measures. As another commenter stated “not paranoia but a justified fear” of this country one day removing our right to load our defensive tools with the ammunition necessary to have our pistols work for more uses than just a paperweight. That being said, we can’t find 9mm ammo to train with our weapon.

Another good point, we have other friends who have also become interested in guns. We met several Free Staters who have been very gracious in showing us proper gun safety even inviting us out to their range to fire off many different types of ammo and guns.

We’re luck to be in a place like NH. We’d be more lucky if we could put away a few hundred rounds for a rainy day.
