Barack Obama says America can “absorb” another terrorist attack

September 22, 2010

Excerpts from Bob Woodward’s new book–Obama’s Wars–have been released and they are very enlightening to say they least. They appear to show that Barack Obama was more concerned with not losing his party than he was about not losing the war.

As frightful as it is that Barack Obama seems to have put politics above providing our troops with the tools they need to win the Afghanistan war, there is one quote that–if true–really bothers the hell out of me:

We can absorb a terrorist attack. We’ll do everything we can to prevent it, but even a 9/11, even the biggest attack ever . . . we absorbed it and we are stronger

We can “absorb” another terrorist attack, just as we “absorbed” September 11th? I suppose I understand what he was trying to say; I think that he was trying to say that September 11th didn’t break America’s will, that we pulled through that awful day and did not let the terrorists stop us from carrying on our lives after the mourning period was over.

This clumsily worded phrase by Barack Obama certainly is a highly insensitive way to say that America rebounded from September 11th–if indeed that is what he was trying to say. I would ask Barack Obama to talk to those people who lost family, friends, and loved ones on that day and ask them if they “absorbed” the loss and if they were willing to “absorb” another attack such as September 11th.

For a leftist such as Barack Obama–who claims to be caring and sensitive to the needs of others–to make such an insensitive claim is unbelievable to me. He simply does not think before he speaks; he knew that he was being interviewed for this book so he cannot claim that he was blindsided. I am sure he will claim that he “misspoke”  but this excuse by people on the left is growing old.

Can you imagine if President Bush was quoted as saying something to the effect of “sure, we want to prevent another attack, but if we don’t, oh well, we will simply absorb it and move on.” The attacks from the left and the media would have already started.

But there is another aspect about that quote that I wanted to touch on also: Barack Obama claimed in that quote above that we are a stronger nation now. I find this interesting because for so long we were told that President Bush’s post September 11th policies have made America less secure, less strong, and less respected around the globe. Is Barack Obama now claiming that President Bush is responsible for making us stronger? It sounds that way to me.

When America needed a leader after the September 11th attack President Bush met that challenge and promised America that this would never happen again under his watch–and it didn’t. He didn’t say that he hoped we would not be attack again, he made sure we weren’t.

We pulled through September 11th not because America could “absorb” a terrorist attack but because we knew we had a man in the White House who showed us that America wouldn’t back down in the face of evil. He showed us that America wouldn’t have to “absorb” another terrorist attack.

If only Barack Obama were such a leader. I hope that we will never have to “absorb” another attack but one has to wonder if words like this give our enemy hope that America is softening once again.

I shudder to think of how our country will react if we suffer a major terrorist attack while President Obama is in office. That is not a pleasant thought, Steve.

No it isn’t, and I hope we never have to find out. There have been some close calls that have only been stopped by the ineptitute of the would be bombers though.

    Afghanistan – absolutley
Iraq – probably a bad idea
All the BS “security” measures we have taken at home in response to 9/11? We gave them exactly what they wanted. We squander billions playing whack-a-mole and giving up our liberties all so we can prevent another attack that killed fewer people than die from drunk driving. Yeah it was terrible, sorry for the families. But we fell over. We gave up that which is most precious to us to prevent another pin prick. The biggest negative effect 9/11 had was our overreaction at home…

Just so no one thinks I am some dyed in the wool lefty fruit cake, I spent twenty years on active duty and have definitely paid my dues for 9/11.

I don’t think that I would refer the September 11th attack as a pin prick, it was the largest enemy attack on our soil and it needed to be dealt with.
      Thank you for your service!

Your take on his comment about the country being stronger now is an interesting one — I’ll have to look for the full quote. But as one who lost several friends that day I can tell you that I am not offended by his comment and I do not think it fair to extend the comment as a trivial remark delivered without compassion to those families. A poorly chosen word perhaps but not irresponsible as you suggest.

The quote about America being stronger now does seem to be contrary to the position that he held for so long. I also would like to see more of these quote–I guess we will have to buy the book.
I am sorry to hear that you lost friends on September 11th. Irresponsible might have been the wrong word, but it does seem to be insensitive to me. I did write what I thought he was trying to say, and I agree, this was certainly a poorly chosen word.
