Barack Obama says there will be no debt deal without Republican compromise

July 11, 2011

Earlier today Barack Obama held a press conference and he declared that there would be no debt deal if the Republicans did not compromise in these negotiations. By compromise Barack Obama is demanding that tax increases be included as part of the deal, something the Republicans have thus far refused to cave in on. By taking on such a strong stance on taxes Barack Obama is engaged in the very same “my way or the highway” approach to the debt debates that he claims the Republicans of. (And of course there is the fact that Barack Obama in 2009, while touting his broken campaign promise to end the Bush tax cuts by extending them, admitted that taxes shouldn’t be raised during a recession.)

I would remind Barack Obama that the American people spoke loudly and clearly last November, so what the Republicans are actually doing is taking the peoples’ side. The American people rejected Obamacare and the out of control spending and taxing in Washington and they responded with their votes in what Barack Obama himself describes as a “shellacking.” Yet Barack Obama and the Democrats ignored the will of the people and forced Obamacare on the people anyway, apparently oblivious to the will of the people. And he is at it again; what he calls “my way or the highway” politics is more accurately described as “the American peoples’ way or the highway,” yet it is becoming more and more obvious that Barack Obama doesn’t give a damn what the American people want or what the American people voted for last November. John Boehner is playing from a position of strength and he understands what the American people voted for last November:

The American people will not accept — and the House cannot pass — a bill that raises taxes on job creators

Besides running on the promise of repealing Obamacare, the Republicans won re-election by promising to cut spending without raising taxes and the Republicans simply cannot give in on this issue or they will be relegated to obscurity by the American people.

Barack Obama continued by saying that he would not vote for another temporary raising of the debt ceiling:

This is the United States of America. And, you know, we don’t manage our affairs in three-month increments

This would be news to the Democrats because it was they who were too scared to pass a permanent budget before the election; it is the fault of the president’s own party that the United States has been operating on temporary budgets because they were derelict of duty and failed to pass a budget for the last fiscal year. Barack Obama must have forgotten about this little tidbit.

He then went on to state in condescending fashion that “It’s irresponsible. They know better,” when asked what he thought of Republican claims that the debt ceiling needn’t be raised again. Again, this is interesting because he was singing a different tune when as a Senator he voted against raising the debt ceiling when President Bush was requesting it. Back then he claimed that the fact the Congress was debating raising the debt ceiling that it showed a lack of leadership and it would be irresponsible to raise the debt ceiling. Funny how his position has changed on this issue now that it is he who wants the debt ceiling raised, isn’t it?

Barack Obama can’t seem to come to terms with his own positions, how does he expect to convince the Republicans to compromise when he doesn’t even know what he stands for? The one thing that Barack Obama is consistent in is his inconsistency.

Boehner should carry a laptop with him and every time Obeyme opens his mouth Boehner should play that video.

He is playing from the standard dumbocrat playbook… compromise means that republicans do whatever the dumbocrats want.

Hopefully, Boehner and company have finally figured out there is no compromise with any dumbocrat.

You are right, compromise to Obama means it is time for Republicans to give him what he wants.

Yes Steve, obama is consistently inconsistent. He must have taken his cue from John Kerry and others – I was for the war before I was against it. That’s just another way of saying “it’s OK for me to do or say something as long as the other side doesn’t say or do that.” A selective stance on the issues.

Exactly, the left has a long history of taking both sides of an issue depending on the situation and John Kerry is the perfect example.

The Dems didn’t pass a budget when they had both houses on Congress. Obama was willing to meet with the Taliban but not Republicans. Sometimes I wonder if this whole thing was planned by Obama or whether it’s just the Democrats in the House trying to get him back for their losses last year.

I agree, Steve. President Obama is talking out of both sides of his mouth on this issue. However, I see something about to happen that I am not particularly happy about. The President and the Democrats have effectively boxed the Republicans in and made it appear that they are more interested in playing politics than they are in actually reducing the deficit. I don’t know why they are able to do this so easily, but the news is now going to be all about how the Democrats are wanting to cut more spending than the Republicans, etc., etc. We all know it isn’t true, but I am afraid we have ourselves another uphill battle to reshape the debate about this and let the general public know what is really happening.

Yeah, it appears as if Obama has positioned himself nicely as a moderate by asking for $4 trillion in cuts only to watch the Republicans back away from it because of the tax increases. He knew they wouldn’t accept that so he proposed it and now he feels as if he has the upper hand. I think people are tired of these games however.

As had been suggested, lets call his bluff. The GOP goes ahead and passes a bill. Let Reid et al, turn it down, or Obama veto it. Pin it back on him.

I saw a chart that showed federal spending included 21% for pensions and 18% for “other.” Couple that with the hundreds of billions the CBO found in duplicate programs and you have your cuts. What are these guys even arguing about?

It sure is frustrating, isn’t it? The Congress seems to be ignoring the CBO repost about the billions in duplicate programs. It would seem as if this would be a great place to start.

I just had to put out a fire here at work. An elderly retiree who is working as a janitor here (and believe me, ANYONE who works an honest job has my respect!) was holding forth about how the Republicans HAD to back down or he wouldn’t get his Social Security check in August. I told him that what he’d just heard on the news was BS, that Obama was being a Drama Queen, and managed to get him calmed down. I reminded him how, every time the city wants to raise taxes, they moan and groan that they’ll have to lay off cops and firefighters, and how even when they don’t get their tax increases, they somehow manage to find cuts that don’t involve our first responders. I said this was the same thing, no different.

    This is getting ridiculous!

The Democrats have resorted to the same old fear-mongering tactics they always fall back on. I hope you were able to convince him but I would guess it fell on deaf ears.

I’m honestly not sure, Steve. There’s a strong possibility that he only calmed down and stopped talking for as long I was present. What amazes me is what you just mentioned… that the Democrats have been using this very same tactic for at least 30 years that I personally know of, and this man is old enough to know that… but doesn’t seem to remember it.

The GOP is compromising, by offering to raise the debt ceiling in the first place.

Matt… Sen. McConnell is offering a compromise. If he can’t get the House to back him up, it won’t make a difference. A three-way deadlock is still a deadlock.

The last thing the Republicans need right now is for the leadership to split and McConnell is well on the way to doing just that.

I’m with Sen. McConnell and Kyle…There is no solution while Obama is in office, while the Senate is not bullet proof in Conservative hands.

“Under Mr. McConnell’s plan, Congress would pass legislation authorizing the president to request a total $2.5 trillion debt-limit increase in three stages—$700 billion by Aug. 2 followed later in the year by two $900 billion installments. The increases could take effect without congressional approval, but Congress could block it with a resolution of disapproval. It would take a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate to override a veto.

The bill also would require Mr. Obama to spell out spending cuts equal to the debt limit increases he requested, but Congress would not have to approve such spending cuts for the debt limit hike to take effect.”

Obama and his minions are purposely destroying this Nation…lets put all the onus on his ass…then let the chips fall…I think US voting Citizens realize that the Obamanation Administration is Evil, and it’s time to make Progressives Pay.

    Aloha!

Please God and Conservatives forgive me for what I thought/wrote [^^see above^^]. I did not know what I was thinking…I can only conclude that I must be punch-drunk from all of this BS!

Sen. McConnell and any member of either house of Congress that has been there before the mid-term elections of 2010, I say this to You! “YOU ARE THE PROBLEM, NOT THE SOLUTION!”

Get on board with We The People, or get the hell out of the way! Do not bend, do not break…NO to raising the debt ceiling…NO new taxes…CUT-CAP-BALANCE!

Again O’ Lord and Conservatives Please Forgive me, for I knew not what I was saying.
