Gunrunner: Charles Grassley calls for Lanny Breuer’s resignation on the Senate floor

December 7, 2011

Earlier today Senator Charles Grassley took to the Senate floor and demanded the resignation of Assistant Attorney General  Lanny Breuer.

Here are the details why Senator Grassley made this demand:

On October 18, 2010, Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer sent communiqués to Attorney General Eric Holder alerting the A.G. that indictments over Fast and Furious could be forthcoming.  This alert came on the heels of briefings on Fast and Furious which were sent to Holder at least as early July 2010. Yet although Fast and Furious was the topic of such correspondence and the focus of such briefings, in February 2011 Breuer told Congress he knew nothing about the gun walking tactics which had been used in the operation. His contention was that he only learned of the tactics once Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry had been killed in December 2010.

More recently, however, Breuer has decided he knew about the gun walking aspects of Fast and Furious as early as April 2010. But he continues to carry water for the DOJ by saying that although he knew, he never took the time to tell Holder about the gun walking.

First  Lanny Breuer claimed he knew nothing about the deadly gunrunning scandal known as Fast and Furious even though he sent Eric Holder an email warning him of the upcoming investigation, and then he claimed he did know about the scandal earlier than he previously admitted but that he never bothered to tell Eric Holder about the scandal even as the investigation was about to get underway.

Needless to say, these two statements are quite contradictory and indicate that he was involved in a coverup. This is part of what Charles Grassley had to say in calling for his resignation:

The Justice Department had publicly denied to Congress that ATF would ever walk guns. Yet the head of the Criminal Division, [Lanny] Breuer knew otherwise and said nothing.

It is past time for accountability at the senior levels of the Justice Department. That accountability needs to start with…Mr. Breuer. I believe it is time for him to go.

Charles Grassley is right on two counts: It is time for Mr. Breuer to go, and accountability STARTS here. But is should not end here, this would be a good start but it should not be the end of this scandal.

I agree with the author of the above linked article: Lanny Breuer perjured himself before the Congress and should be brought up on charges.

He appears ready to take the fall for Eric Holder and Barack Obama but this scandal goes much higher than the Assistant Attorney General and I trust that Darrel Issa and Charles Grassley will not stop here if he does step down.

I agree he should go, but it should be with indicting him, not with a resignation. All a resignation will do is give him another job in another department, so he can be kept close track of. We know it goes further up the food chain than Mr Breuer. This goes for AG Holder, indict is the word, not resignation. I posted in one of the earlier posts about all that has gone on today with the bomb scare and the Blago trial, the MSM will use that for cover. How much do you think will be about the questioning tomorrow of AG Holder, if the MSM has anything to do with it?

There will always be a story which the MSM thinks is more important than this one, and it is sad that the media doesn’t give a damn about government policies which led to the death of an American hero. You are right, this needs to end in indictments, not resignations.
