Barack Obama to implement Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan through the Department of Health and Human Services

September 9, 2012

I first heard about this story over at Political Realities: It appears as if Barack Obama has directed the Department of Health and Human Services to implement  a pilot program similar to Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan with one difference. While Paul Ryan’s plan is voluntary and nothing would change for seniors in regard to Medicare unless they personally decided to opt out of Medicare, Barack Obama’s plan would automatically privatize Medicare in states that decide to participate in this program and seniors would then have to opt out of the program or they would be automatically enrolled. Barack Obama is doing precisely what he falsely claimed Paul Ryan was trying to do.

Since Paul Ryan first introduced his budget plan the Democrats in general and Barack Obama in particular have been hammering him and attempting to scare seniors, going so far as to release a video which showed him pushing granny off a cliff. All the while neglecting to make mention of the fact that Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan was voluntary and nobody’s Medicare coverage would change unless they decided to change it.

Is it any wonder that so many Americans no longer believe a single word to come out of Barack Obama’s mouth? The man is a master of doing one thing while saying another and this is just the latest in a long line of examples. For more on Barack Obama’s hypocrisy on this issue please check out Larry’s post on Political realities that I linked to above.

Obama is the poster boy for HYPOCRAY! His entire life has been one of pretending to be someone he isn’t.

Thanks for the link, Steve. I hope this story makes the rounds several times between now and the election. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan both need to be hammering on this program. Not that it is a bad program, but the fact that it is so similar to Ryan’s plan, and that it is not so voluntary. This needs to be exposed for what it is.

You are welcome Larry. Romney and Ryan need to make sure everybody hears the news that Obama stole Ryan’s plan even as he was bashing it! Like you, I haven’t put this program down, but focused on the hypocrisy of Obama instead. When will we see the commercials with Obama pushing granny off a cliff?

Turns out this pilot’s been in the works for about a year now. It’s not a voucher program, but it IS an attempt to coordinate coverage (and thereby save money) for those eligible both for Medicare and Medicaid. I didn’t see anything about participants having to come up with premium dollars from their own pockets, which was such a problem with the original Ryan plan that it was watered down dramatically. The premiums for this pilot program, apparently, will be paid by the states and the federal government.

Personally, I think it’s a mistake – involving private insurers will only muddy the waters and use taxpayer dollars to guarantee profits for insurance companies. These seniors should be placed on Medicare, Medicaid should reimburse Medicare for things like deductibles and co-insurance, and Medicaid shouldn’t be paying any medical bills for dual-eligible people.

Take good care, and may God bless us all!
