Immigration reform: Apparently Republicans need to pass the bill to find out what is in it

July 20, 2013

We all remember the now infamous words of then Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, during the Obamacare debate when she made the stunning statement about needing to pass the bill to find out what was in it.

We all remember the scorn, contempt, and ridicule such an outrageous statement drew from many on the right as the blogoshpere exploded. Eventually Ms. Speaker got her way, the bill was passed and now we are learning what is in it. But it cost her the Speakership and it cost the Democrats the majority in the House–a majority they still have not been able to win back.

Surely no Democrat and no Republican will utter such a statement publicly again but that doesn’t mean they are above passing legislation without knowing what is in it.

This time it is the Republicans who have no idea what is in the bill they are promoting as must-pass legislation. Did you know that the immigration reform legislation would change the United States Code to allow the forging of two passports before a crime is committed? Neither did John McCain or Marco Rubio, and they wrote the bill.

First up is John McCain. Mr. McCain was asked how many passports the immigration reform bill allowed a person to forge before it was considered a felony under the new law, here is the exchange:

Senator McCain, can I ask you a question about the Senate immigration bill? Under the bill, how many passports can someone forge before it becomes a crime?”

McCain said,  “You’re going to have to ask our folks that, I don’t think that we stand for any forgeries.” followed-up, “Can you tell me why that would be part of the bill in the first place?”

McCain answered, “ I cannot tell you that it is part of the bill.”

The next person on the docket was Marco Rubio, here is how he answered the question:

Under the Senate immigration bill, how many passports can someone forge before it becomes a crime?” asked Rubio Thursday on Capitol Hill.

“How many–you can’t forge any passports,” Rubio replied. ”That’s a federal crime now”

“It’s actually a part of the bill that it’s up, that you can do two, and three and on it’s a crime. Why would that be a part of it?”

Well, first of all, I think what you’re talking about is the way the law is described vis-a-vis, umm, waivers that people can get. And as I said, I mean, there are elements of that bill that continue to be, need to be improved, and I myself have disagreements about the way the waiver structure was put in the bill, and my hope is that it can be improved through the House process when they do their own bill

I guess you can understand their confusion because Marco Rubio is right when he said that forging a passport is “a Federal crime now.” But did you notice the word ‘now’ in that statement? Interesting, isn’t it? Maybe he does know that the new immigration law would allow a person to forge two passports and when called on it that is why he stammered through some waiver excuse.

Or maybe he just didn’t know what was in the bill, we certainly know that John McCain had no idea this provision was in the bill. One has to wonder what else is in the bill that neither we, nor the politicians who wrote the bill for that matter, will not find out about until after the bill is passed.

Ho hum. The precedent has been set and it would appear that anyone writing, backing or voting to pass a bill is neither required or expected to read that bill or have any working knowledge of any said bill. Shame on us for enabling this through our sending these lazy, self interested creeps back to congress over and over again.

Yes, it is our fault for this because we continue to send these people back to Washington. It is clear that they will do whatever is needed to pass the bill and that means giving concessions” to the other side in return for votes. They give these “concessions” blindly and this is what happens, nobody knows what is in the bills they are passing.

The only thing that is needed are secure borders especially are southern border, then find out who is here. A border fence could put many people to work. Will a fence work, check with Israel they would be more than happy to assist.
Should be a priority to defend our sovereignty and put the AMERICAN home team first…..
What we will be served up on a daily basis is endless on and on that goes nowhere.

I agree, but sadly our two Senators do not agree. They have given in to the Democrats for a promise the border might be secured someday but we all know that will never happen.I expected this from Shaheen but not from Ayotte and I will do everything in my power to make sure Mrs. Ayotte does not serve a second term.

This seems like the NORM. I cannot remember a FEDERAL BUDGET that was read in its entirety before passage in my lifetime, and I am 70. By the way, BHO has yet to have a BUDGET. HOW CAN YOU BUDGET OVER 3 TRILLION DOLLARS???????????????
Its easy when most of it is borrowed.
