Obamacare: The IRS cannot account for $67 million taken from healthcare slush fund

  According to this article when Obamacare was passed into law there was a provision in the bill which gave the IRS $1 billion to implement Obamacare.

The “Health Insurance Reform Implementation Fund” (HIRIF) was tucked into Obamacare in order to give the IRS money to enforce the tax provisions of the healthcare law.  The fund, totaling some $1 billion of taxpayer money, was used to roll out enforcement mechanisms for the approximately 50 tax provisions of Obamacare.

  However a newly released report finds that the IRS did not account for $67 million spent from this fund:

According to the report:  “Specifically, the IRS did not account for or attempt to quantify approximately $67 million [from the slush fund] of indirect ACA costs incurred for Fiscal Years 2010 through 2012.”

  There are those who would defend the IRS by stating that $67 million out of $1 billion really isn’t all that to be worried about because it is such a small percentage (this is what Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick might call leakage, as he did when he learned about the welfare fraud in his state) but I beg to differ because, as the report says, the IRS did not even try to account for that money.

  The irony that the agency which is tasked with ensuring the American people can account for all their taxable income and expenditures when it comes to money owed to the government did not bother to account for their own expenditures of taxpayer dollars is simply too rich to ignore.

  Was this a simple accounting mistake or this this genuine fraud? Judging by all the recent scandals the IRS is mired in I find it hard to believe this was a mistake. Obamacare is not even fully implemented and already we are seeing fraud and abuse from the agency which is tasked with enforcing the healthcare mandates.
