House leaders push through ‘doc fix’ bill on a voice vote while conservatives were not on the floor

March 28, 2014

According to this article the House leadership (the establishment Republicans) used a voice vote via a temporary “suspension of the rules” in order to push through the “doc fix” Medicare expansion bill while very few members were actually on the House Floor to vote.

This was apparently done with the intent of silencing the conservative Republicans’ opposition to the legislation and the vote took approximately 30 seconds according to the story.

The establishment Republicans are defending this by claiming the bill would have passed anyway but of course we will never know for sure because of the rule suspension. If this is true why was this backhanded measure used in the first place if the votes were there? The establishment Republicans claimed that there was some deadline which must be met but I am not buying it and neither are the conservatives in the House who saw their voices silenced.

Here is what some of them are saying:

“I think they pulled a fast one,” Kansas Republican Rep. Tim Huelskamp, who had planned to vote against the temporary fix

Leadership, he said, “misled conservatives and all of the Republican conference.”

He called the temporary doc fix a “gimmick,” and said passing it was “exactly what the Republican leadership totally and honestly promised they were not going to do on this issue.”

“This has become the way they operate,” he said of party leadership, calling the vote “disappointing.”

Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert voiced his displeasure in a floor speech following the vote — calling the vote “a surprising twist.”

“So I was very surprised today that with us in the majority, our own leadership in charge, something as important as the doctor fix would be brought to the floor on a voice vote,” Gohmert said.

“Now I know that I need to get with some other members and make sure we have people on the floor, since we won’t be sure what our own leadership is going to do,” he went on. “That’s very unfortunate. It’s unfortunate. You need to be able to trust your own leadership.”

Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash had a similar take.

“Short on votes for controversial spending bill, so GOP & Dem leaders rammed it through by ‘voice vote’ in empty House chamber. Not right,” Amash tweeted Thursday afternoon.

But the kicker came from Paul Broun who compared John Boehner to Vladimir Putin:

“I consider it a step backwards for democracy,” he said in a statement to TheDC. “This Putin-esque behavior is an example of why I voted against Boehner as Speaker of the House.”

This of course is not surprising when you consider the fact that John Boehner punished the conservative members of the House by removing them from Committee Chairs for not toeing the establishment Republican party line while threatening to punish others if they did not learn from this action.

I  just wish John Boehner had as much vigor and interest in going after Barack Obama and his radical policies as he does with silencing the conservative caucus in his own party.

This issue is not about whether or not you agree with the outcome of the vote but rather with the way the vote was conducted, for a certain segment of our elected officials were not allowed to voice their opinions which, by proxy, means their constituents were not represented.

While many Republicans are claiming that Barack Obama is lawless we can see by his actions that John Boehner is no better for while no laws were broken and the Constitution, in Article I Section 5 states “each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings” this certainly seems to have been underhanded and a violation of what Montesquieu called the “Spirit of the Laws.”

If this doesn’t convince people that we have a split Republican party, I do not know what will. It was sneaky for them to pull it, more what I expect from the Democrats. Hell, the Democrats were happy to play along, it seems. So, this is all the more reason to vote the establishment Republicans out of office in November. This was such a cheap shot and I hope they pay the price when we vote.

Agreed! This is something I would expect from the Democrats but it is not all that surprising Boehner did this because he has been going after the Conservatives in the House for awhile now.

Rep Paul Broun has it all wrong. This was not Putin-esque on the part of Boehner, it was Boehner-esque. The stark difference it would seem between Putin and Boehner is that Putin can hold his liquor while Boehner looks like he’s ready to fall off his bar stool at any time.

It has been rumored that Boehner is very fond of the bottle perhaps that is why he is so easily outmaneuvered by the Democrats all the time.

I agree with you as well. The dems have always supported the fix every year. More to this than meets the eye. Something smells. By the way, our local hospitals have yet to see one single penny from obamacare patients. My former employer is on the verge of bankruptcy as well as hundreds of community hospitals. This is the planned takeover Obama has wanted all along. Force docs into becoming employees than do in the hospitals.

Makes you wonder what else was attached to this bill, doesn’t it?
Yep, Obamacare is working just as planned!

They all seem to be in it for their own gain, becoming more bold and open about that fact. With technology, soon they won’t even have to physically (even) be there to vote or do what they do – this might just be the beginning. Mentally many aren’t there any – even when their bodies are! How many of these bills could they tell you they ‘knew what’s in them – what they’re about’! They probably couldn’t with the UN-Affordable health care – even Barry couldn’t state a fraction of what’s in it! Queen P was wrong – passing it – yet still ignorant about what’s in it!! http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/ct-solitaire.htm#.UzYyY16T5ek

There is no doubt they are all in this for the personal agendas and when you see something like this you realize how corrupted the system really is–or should I say the politicians really are.

Zip, there are a few that we know are voting the right way, but only a few. I believe that once they get to DC or to the State Capitols, they start being bought and paid for. Sad this happens, but it does. If you ever sit and watch when a vote is happening on the floor, they are laughing and back slapping, etc. all just a bunch of good old boy and girls. I really do not feel I am being represented by them anymore If I ever was. So, we pay their huge salaries, retirements and kickbacks from who knows where and we get taken to the cleaners. Makes you want to just walk away from this and enjoy what days we still have left that might not be controlled, doesn’t it?

Yeah, there are days I just want to walk away and say to hell with it but I guess I am just too damned stubborn to do it.

The ones that ‘should’ walk away are the very ones who fight tooth and nail to stay the roost. I agree lou222 there are a few that seem to have ‘the good for all’ in mind, but I’m seeing that we’ve been hoodwinked for some time – born into the ‘a system of illusion’. In the meantime Steve has to just hold the course in the ‘perfect storm’! : /

Ok then, as I suspected, I should have waited for awhile before I reposted. Take out one of them if you can, Steve.
