Open thread for Sunday, February 22nd: Pudding Time
Here is the open thread for Sunday, February 22nd. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.
Last week was a very slow week by my standards with only 6 posts but did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure it does not happen again. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.
In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.
The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!?
In addition to a lack of motivation and what I consider to be a lack of interesting topics to write about I was also distracted for the last few days with my new laptop. I only use the computer for the internet and for simple word processing so I have little need for all of the bells and whistles others are interested in. Because of this I prefer a netbook to a full-blown laptop; I love the small size and the fact it is dedicated to my needs.
For the last several years I have been blogging using an Acer Aspire One D260 Netbook but it was getting old and the performance of late has been severely lacking. Normal internet browsing and blogging had become painfully slow despite my best efforts to clean up the computer and make it manageable.
I decided it was time to buy a new Acer netbook and I thought it would be very inexpensive due to the popularity of new technology such as tablets. However I soon learned that the price to be paid by this new technology was the discontinuation of the netbook. It was simply obsolete technology and nobody was interested in it any more.
However, I found a compromise between purchasing a full sized laptop and the netbook and that came in the form of the Dell Inspiron 11.6″ notebook 2-1 computer. This computer functions as a combination of a small laptop and a tablet. It is a laptop but the display can rotate completely around for use as a tablet. I am in love! Blogging and browsing is going to be much less frustrating going forward. (Save the frustration of following politics in general.)
This computer is slightly larger than my previous netbook yet smaller than a laptop and it is much faster than what I have been dealing with for awhile now. To make a long story short (if that is possible at this point) I have spent the last few days trying to personalize my new computer to my liking by deleting all the crap which came with it that I will never use as well as making it look and function the way I want it to. I have also been trying to get used to Windows 8.1, and now that I am figuring out how it works I have to say the new Windows is pretty cool once you get passed the differences from Windows 7.
With my long-winded excuse for not posting as much as I would have liked to last week out of the way it is time to move on to the musical selection of the week. This week I give you the band Primus performing “Pudding Time” live on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.
Slap that bass!

Hmmmm, that was an interesting group! Will reserve my opinion til I look up a few more of their songs!
I know what you mean about a new computer. I went out a year ago and got a Windows 8 and after messing with it, took it back. It was completely foreign to the Windows 7 program. I do believe that 8.1 is a bit more user friendly than 8 and closer to what 7 was. It is always fun trying to remove crap that you know you will not need that they install, anyway. Hope it is working out for you, but sounds like the swivel screen is pretty neat to use and you are getting the hang of it. I had my HP put back to factory specs and it has been working fine, so I have dodged having to update. I did go out and get a 10.1″ tablet to take with me when we travel instead of the laptop, it does what I need and alot less space is needed.
I am really wondering about SDL, have you seen or heard anything from him?

I might be able to save you a little time by letting you know that most of Primus’ songs sound pretty close to this one!
On 8.1 there is a button on the start page which allows you to go to the desktop so that it looks more like what we are used to, however if I want to run a program I have to go back to the start page or pin them to the taskbar. I think from there I can add desktop shortcuts. I am getting used to it. The swivel screen is pretty cool although I have not really used it as a tablet yet.
I don’t know what is going on with SDL but I am worried!

Please help with some info. Who here uses Twitter? How much? And for what reason?
I confess I haven’t been here much because I have stepped into the time machine of Twitter. You go in and come out hours latter. And I feel extra guilty because while you are dying of global warming, we are having warm sun, so I should be working outside.
You have the polar arctic vortex, I am in the Twitter vortex.

I use Twitter but mostly to share blog posts and articles from other websites which I find interesting. I rarely just go to Twitter and read the news feed because you are right about it being addictive. It is extremely interesting and fun but man can you get lost in time there!

It sounds like something that sucks you in and you can’t get out? I do not use it, so maybe I don’t appreciate how it works, but doubt I will be frequenting it.

It is very addicting, especially when a hashtag starts trending. It is very entertaining at times and yes it is easy to get sucked in!

Bruce, don’t forget to follow me on Twitter although I might not be able to follow you back: Twitter has this rule that when you have a certain amount of people you are following you are not allowed to follow more people until you have as many followers as the amount you are following. I am not allowed to follow more people at this point until I get more followers but sometimes Twitter does allow me to follow additional people. I am not sure how this all works.

I am new to this whole Twitter thing, so that is a good rule to know. Are you listed by your name? I did a search for American Watchtower but didn’t see it.

I signed up years for Twitter and then never used it, when I went back to use it I tired to change the name to America’s Watchtower but it was too long so I left it what it was. I am just listed under my name and my handle is @mpinkeyes.
If you go to the Twitter widget on the right hand side of my blog there is a follow button there, you should be able to click on it to follow me. That would be the easiest way I think.

I suppose you music choice this time would be as a good ‘dance exercise’ – reminds me of college and a group of ‘free dancers’ that would jump up and move around the floor – this would be the song for them! Keep us in shape if we did it!
Here’s one that goes a bit deeper into the Joan Rivers’ death. There’s much suspicion about what resulted from a ‘normal procedure’ going wrong and that there was a unauthorized Dr. in the mix that some believe led to her death. Your right. I hadn’t read that. How could Newsweek get that wrong?

Makes you wonder…

Seems like there’s nicer things to ‘wonder’ about! But, these are just somethings that have gone on, that fill the cracked foundation for the future.

Yes there are nicer things to wonder about and sadly too many Americans bury their heads in the sand by ignoring these stories by focusing on other, much less important issues. Not to toot our own horns here but it is up to people like us to make every attempt to ensure these issues cannot be ignored!
