House conservatives plot revenge against John Boehner

June 22, 2015

Last week John Boehner continued his long-standing policy of punishing House conservatives who vote their conscience (and presumably the will of their constituents) instead of blindly toeing the establishment line. John Boehner might have finally gone too far as it is now being reported that some conservatives in the House are going to hold a meeting to look at ways of ending what they are now calling the “culture of punishment” up to and including a shakeup in leadership.

  Here is more:

A key bloc of conservatives is laying plans to throttle legislation on the House floor and will meet privately this week to discuss a shakeup of GOP leadership.

The group is irate at what one called a “culture of punishment” that Speaker John Boehner’s leadership team has instituted against dissenting members — most recently the removal of Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) from a subcommittee chairmanship after he bucked Republican leaders on an important procedural vote.

“A change of leadership will start to be talked about in more earnest terms,” Meadows told POLITICO during an interview in his Capitol office Monday. “I’m not angry, but I do have a firm resolve that we change [the process] for Americans.”

He added, “It’s not about ideology. It’s about that all members of Congress need to have their voice heard and this is a place for debate. Not a place for punishment. People should not be worried about the type of vote they cast, ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ based on retribution.”

As the article linked to above states, it is highly unlikely that they will be able to actually change leadership at this point in time because there probably will not be enough support. However it does look as though they may be able to get back at John Boehner by voting with Democrats on procedural motions to hold up Republican supported legislation.

The more credible threat by House conservatives would be to begin voting with Democrats on procedural motions, which would effectively block GOP leaders from advancing favored legislation. In a phone call Sunday evening, members of the Freedom Caucus — led by Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan — began discussing voting in such a concerted way. Freedom Caucus members have already voted no on so-called rule votes — Meadows’ decision to do so last week led to the loss of his subcommittee chairmanship — but they’re mulling doing so with more regularity.

Desperate times call for desperate measures and the time for talking is over because it is clear John Boehner is not listening to the concerns of the people in his caucus who are trying to do what they feel is right. Maybe this will send the Speaker of the House a message he will not be able to ignore.

This is starting to sound like a Marx Brothers movie: Boner demotes conservatives from committees, the conservatives PLOT REVENGE (!!) against Boner. [You can’t make this stuff up…] 🙂

This is crazy! The Republican House in-fighting, who would have thought this could happen. Republicans voting with Democrats….it is like the “Cats and Dogs sleeping together” in Ghostbusters….who could make this up? I have never seen anything like this! Boehner needs to go, but as you said, there are probably not enough of the votes that will take him out…they tried that before. We have a plethora of nefarious plots that are increasing in intensity exponentially, as we speak!

Boehner has had this coming for a long time, it is about time they try to do something about this.
I noticed you managed to work in the word nefarious there…
