The NRA helped to elect Bernie Sanders to the Senate in 1990

July 20, 2015

Bernie Sanders has been enjoying quite a bit of success as a Presidential candidate since he made the announcement that he would seek that office in 2016 but there is one issue his opponents feel they can counter him on. See, Hillary Clinton and Martin O’Malley cannot move to the left of Bernie Sanders on many issues because he is already about as far over there as you can get.

But Bernie Sanders comes from a state where there are virtually no gun laws–there is no permitting required in Vermont…period. And this has to be an issue the liberals are not happy about, especially with the recent gun control push back on.

But did you know that it might have been the NRA which actually got Bernie Sanders elected to the Senate in the first place? Here is how it went down according to this article:

A few days before Election Day in 1990, the National Rifle Association sent a letter to its 12,000 members in Vermont, with an urgent message about the race for the state’s single House seat.

Vote for the socialist, the gun rights group said. It’s important.

“Bernie Sanders is a more honorable choice for Vermont sportsmen than Peter Smith,” wrote Wayne LaPierre, who was — and still is — a top official at the national NRA, backing Sanders over the Republican incumbent.

As a candidate in 1990, Sanders won over gun rights groups by promising to oppose one bill they hated — a measure that would establish a waiting period for handgun sales. In Congress, he kept that promise. The dynamic served as an early demonstration that, despite his pure-leftist persona, Sanders was at his core a pragmatic politician, calculating that he couldn’t win in rural Vermont without doing something for gun owners.

“The gun vote brought us down,” said Judy Shailor, Smith’s 1990 campaign manager.

If Bernie Sanders has an Achilles Heal with the Democratic base it could be on the issue of gun control and his opponents are sure to try to use it against him. It will not matter to them if overall he has a D-rating with the NRA because they will pick and choose some of his gun votes to prove he is out of touch with the base on this issue.

It has been reported that Hillary Clinton is trying to dig up dirt on Bernie Sanders and the linked to article above could be the first salvo fired at Bernie Sanders. If this is all she can come up with I am not sure trying to tie him to the NRA is going to work.

I was unaware of that, but to be sure, they WILL use it against him. We just cannot have all those guns in the hands of the “great unwashed masses”, can we!!!!! I think when they try that with him, there will be a pretty good fight we can sit back and watch. It doesn’t happen with the Democrats as often as in the Republican party, but still will be a nice diversion to watch instead of our own attacking each other! If the Clintons are involved it should be packed full of evil doings!

I was not aware of this either. The NRA’s plan was to send his Republican opponent a message and then get Sanders out of office in the next election but it did not quite work, did it?

I read prior that Steve will be sparingly here for a couple of weeks. And that comments may be allowed a little OT, to keep blog going.
You see where if you get S.S. and need help to administer, regs say you have to turn in guns.
I imagine it will soon apply that if you need H & R Block to help with returns, turn them in as well. And if filing jointly, you have to ask for wife’s W-2 to enclose, turn them in. Then if you had to buy a stamp to mail, turn them in. You couldn’t have licked the envelope by yourself, so hand them over.

Yep,… a little OT is accepted as is a hell of alot OT! Assume you know what I am saying!

In the end they will get us all on some technicality, after all if it is not true, who is to say it is not? They will slowly start chipping away at us. There are ALOT of us baby boomers, they are going to have their work cut out taking care of all of us.

Yeah, I slipped into the Silent Generation by a year or two, before Boomers.
First statement about need administrator for S.S. is what I read about turn in guns. My other comments there… all the way down to spit licking the envelope is sort of 1984ish. French kissing isn’t included. lol

My mom has a CCW and saw an article about this. I told her that since she uses an accountant, the government might consider that as needing help with her finances and ‘deem’ her incompetent and revoke her Constitutionally protected Right to own and carry a firearm.

My dad was livid, he really doesn’t like obama. 🙂

I should hope not, Laura! I would hope what they mean is to have someone do your financial stuff on a full time basis, not have an accountant do, say your taxes….However, if they want to leave an area blank as they do on alot of the laws they try and make (what happened to Congress making the laws) guess they can always fill in what they want later….something just doesn’t seem right that they can pass something they have no right to draw up and then add to it as they see they need to….am I wrong here?

The government’s been doing this to veterans for a couple of years now. The thing is, the courts are supposed to adjudicate a person incompetent…not the VA. obama’s administration is bypassing the courts, just like they bypass Congress.

It seems that Congress are just a bunch of “has beens” in the eyes of the Administration. If that is true, why are they still collecting pay checks AND bennies? I could sure use my portion of their salaries here at home.

Also mixed up bank records, your not balancing check book correctly, need bank help to figure out. How many cents off before bank reports this problem? You not have *cents* enough to have a gun. Those with plenty of cents will have those with guns around for protection. lol
