Seize the day and never let it go because life is precious

September 29, 2015

CarpeDiemCarpe diem. Seize the day. We have all heard this term but have you really ever stopped to think about what it means? There is no wrong answer: carpe diem can mean one thing to one person and another thing altogether to someone else. It all depends on how you define the term and what your perspective is.

To one person carpe diem could mean scaling the highest mountain to its peak and to another it could mean getting through a day without succumbing to personal demons. To me it is somewhere in the middle and I have been thinking about this quite a bit over the last few months.

“The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry.” Those words were spoken by Brooks Hatlin in “The Shawshank Redemption” and the more I think about it the more true those words seem to me. I have also been thinking about those words quite a bit lately.

Everybody is in a “big damn  hurry” and it seems that nobody stops to simply enjoy the day because of the pressures of trying to make everyone happy in the course of getting to the weekend for their lone sanity check. But when you think about it that is just living, it is not life, and that is a clear distinction that I think we should all focus on.

Carpe Diem. Maybe that is not quite accurate, perhaps the saying should be frui diem. Enjoy the day. Do not take the day for granted and do not forget to be grateful for every day you have on this earth for we have a finite amount of time in this life and we cannot afford to to let it pass by while we are caught up in the vicissitudes of  things that really are not all that important in the long run.

Life can be demanding: We all have deadlines and schedules to meet and people make demands on us every day. It is easy to get caught up in the rat race and to lose sight of what is really important. We are constantly pulled in multiple directions by people who have a goal in mind, or who are caught up in  their own agenda that is contrary to what might be best for us, but while we strive to make others happy we must remember that it is most important to make sure those who mean the most to us are the ones who we make happy. It is them we must be there for above all others and we cannot let the distractions of the material world blind our sight or drop a veil over our eyes blinding us to what is most important in this world.

I think Morrissey and The Smiths summed it up perfectly in the song “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now.”

In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don’t care if I live or die

Do not sweat the little things: You didn’t make the schedule? Life goes on. You are in a hurry to get somewhere but are stuck in traffic? As you feel the panic attack come on and you feel the anger build take a deep breath and remind yourself that in the end this is of little consequence. Never take a single day for granted and remember that life is a gift and live every day like it could be your last because it could be.

Slow down and remember what is most important to you and your family, but most important of all, never take your family or your friends for granted because they are always there for you in your darkest hours and they are what is most important–not some arbitrary deadline or schedule. Deadlines and schedules can be changed but the decisions you make in life cannot.

Always remember that while a person might appear to be strong on the outside that you have no idea what they are going through on the inside. People have a way of hiding what they are really going through, and in part I think this is due to the pressures they feel from the outside because they are trying to be all things to all people. Nobody wants to let anybody down and so often we succumb to the pressures applied to us from multiple directions. This can provide a temporary distraction which can be beneficial in the short-term but only if the person does not lose sight of what is really important to them when they are alone with their thoughts at night.

I am a prime example of this because I do not want to let anyone down and I believe that in general people in society never want to let anyone who expects anything from them down either, even if it is not in their best interest. In doing so they are able to mask their true inner feelings, but by doing so they can lose sight of what is really important.

This is something I have had to come to terms with lately and I have made the decision not to let deadlines and schedules run my life moving forward. Although I always will strive to meet what is expected of me at work I will no longer let it get the best of me because there are more important things in this life.

There were times when deadlines and ultimatums, and the threat of failure, drove me to a point where I felt pressure from outside to meet certain obligations. And while I still feel the need to meet these obligations, because it is part of my job, I no longer let them rule my life from a personal prospective because my true obligation is to my family, whom I love so much, and to the God I am so desperately trying to find when I need him the most. He is there, it is I who am lost but am seeking the Truth…

Carpe diem! Those are words to live by, but make sure your priorities are straight, understand what those words mean to you, and never forget to tell those whom you love that you love them before it is too late.

Seize the day and never let it go because someday it will be gone.

Yes Steve, well stated. Putting things in a healthy and realistic perspective!
Believing God’s Truth really helps! Opens the eyes of our understanding. (KJV – ‘Dispensation of the Gospel of Grace’ Romans – Philemon). What the Law couldn’t do, His Grace could, and did!

Thank you Zip, I have been working on this one on and off for awhile but finally got it to the point where I thought I could post it. I am not a professional writer so it still isn’t what I would like it to be but I think it gets the point across that I was trying to make.

Also, thanks for the link, I think this was my favorite part: “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed”

Yes, a good one to let us know we’re not alone – esp. in what we experience. Another one that notches w/ that: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” You can relate w/ that too!
