January 17th open thread: Cat People/The Man Who Sold the World/Scary Monsters

January 17, 2016

open-threadHere is the open thread for Sunday, January 17th. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.

Last week we covered 6 stories, did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure it does not happen again. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.

In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.

The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!

The rock world lost a legend last week when David Bowie passed away at the age of 69 so here is my tribute to him. First up is “Cat People” performed live, followed by “The Man Who Sold the World” and “Scary Monsters.”

I am going to go out on a limb here and state that I believe most rock fans are fans of at least some of David Bowie’s music, so if this is true I would like people to post their favorite Bowie tunes because I think it will be interesting to see which songs people choose.

  RIP David Bowie

Good one Swiss – a different variety from his collection. What’s the lyric symbolization? One person comments: “This is an autobiographical song by David Bowie that finds him fresh out of a heavy drug use, and his reflection on the man he was during that time.”

      Yes, a good choice SDL!
Zip, I do think this is about his drug addiction. He seems to be admitting he was a junkie during the Major Tom era.

Interesting selection Steve. Bowie did a wide range of different types of music and voices.

Starting later in the vid – first part’s the same as this.

That was an interesting interview, thanks for sharing it. I am not surprised he has what might be a pantheistic view on religion, I think most in the rock industry are not Christians.

    LOVE ALL THE BOWIE SONGS!

Now, on a more serious note, did Rubio just hang himself with what he said here:

Rubio is trying to cash in on his refugee parents claim to the american dream. Their plight was/is an exercise in respectability as was 99.99% of Cuban refugees who came here with their Judson- Christian work ethic and made something if their lives. This is a far cry from the third world hoards numbering in 30-40 million, not the made up 11 million parroted by Ruio and his ilk, here to feed at the government trough. And why are the criminal and anti-Americans elements here among these supposedly hard working peace loving refusing to assimilate illegals streaming In invisible to the corrupt self serving politicians and elites like Rubio? That’s a rhetorical question at best. For Rubio this is his low water mark. Good riddance.

I was checking out my facebook just now and someone posted this…I have always been a fan of the old movies where there was dancing…the ladies had a harder time, they were doing the moves in HEELS! There will never be people as good as these…I never hear of tap dancers, anymore…one I loved to watch was Gregory Hines, from my generation and he is gone, as well. Enjoy if you have time to watch this song they put to a montage of dancers, it is pretty cool!

Okay Lou, you have drawn a secret out of me with this post. I am a huge Fred Astaire fan! I own all of his movies except for the ones which are not musicals, although I have seen most of those as well!
A couple of times I intended to use Fred in the open thread but chickened out. I have heard it said that the women Fred danced with had it harder because they had to do it backwards and in heels and I generally agree with that but on the other hand Fred saved some of his toughest numbers for his solo numbers.
There is a beauty in watching Fred and Ginger dance, or Fred and any of his other partners, dance which you do not see today.
Now that I have admitted this maybe I will post a Fred Astaire dance in the open thread on Sunday.

I like all the old films, so you are not alone…one of my favorites was Yankee Doodle Dandy with James Cagney…here is a bit of a clip with how it came about, but can you imagine dancing down the steps?
My other favorites were Gene Kelly Danny Kaye…I will leave you to bring up the females, but bet I like them, as well. Will look forward to you posting an article…I bet there are alot of “closet” dance lovers from the past…alot of us were raised on those old movies!

Have not seen Yankee Doodle Dandy but I love to watch TCM so maybe it will be on there someday.
Fred Astaire danced with some of the most beautiful women Hollywood ever had, in addition to Ginger he danced with Rita Hayworth, Cid Charisse, and Audrey Hepburn to name a few.

Ya, I guess no one told you that we age one year at a time! I will hit 62 next month and am not entirely sure how that has slipped up on me. Wish my parents had told me this would happen! When I wished my son a happy 36th on Friday, he was not sure how he had gotten that “old”, I just had to start laughing at him and said to try MY age coming up….did it make him feel younger?? Probably not…so guess age is what we make of it…as long as I can crank my tunes up and get low enough to get into the Miata, I am refusing to grow up! I still will have to get “older”, but I will not have to be OLD, is that what you are maybe planning to do yourself? My best friend and I long ago, decided we would wear jeans til we die along with lots of mascara and lipstick….not sure how we will look at 90, but sounds like a good plan!

It turns out that “being old” is a relative term! You feel old because you are over 60 while your son feels old at getting close to 40. I remember when I thought 40 was old but this year I will turn 50. I do not feel 50 and I think how you feel is more important than a number, but of course I did not feel that way when I was 20!

Yep, that about sums it up! I did not look forward to 50, that was my worst year, after that day, I went back to being just ME. Then 60 did not seem as bad, for some reason….62, well, it is just 62….don’t feel it and don’t think I look or act it…I know after seeing pics of my Mom and Dad at 60, my generation is a younger looking 60, so guess we have that in our favor…then seeing my grandparents pics at 60 we look even younger still…maybe there is hope yet! I do not expect to always feel this way, but for now, it works!

I was not looking forward to turning 50 either but after what I went through with my health last year I an grateful to be able to celebrate my 50th, again it is a matter of perspective! 🙂
I think you are absolutely right, we are much younger than our parents and grandparents were when they reached these milestones in their lives. We have it much easier than they did back in the day.

My grand-dad always said that he had seen the most change in his lifetime and I guess he was right…born in 1886 and died in 1979. You know when your elders die, all the knowledge goes with them, too bad we do think of talking about it when they are alive. After they are gone is when you have questions, it seems.

Avery, very long read, but needs to be posted to make sure that people know Clintons background:
WHY IS THIS POLITICAL PIG NOT IN PRISION ???
    Bill Clinton’s loving wife
    By
Richard Morris, former political adviser to President Bill Clinton
If you happen to see the Bill Clinton 5-minute TV ad for Hillary in which he introduces the commercial by saying he wants to share some things we may not know about Hillary’s background, beware. As I was there for most of their presidency and know them better than just about anyone, I offer a few corrections.
Bill says: “In law school, Hillary worked on legal services for the poor.”
The facts are: Hillary’s main extra-curricular activity in law school was helping the Black Panthers, on trial in Connecticut for torturing and killing a federal agent. She went to court every day as part of a law student monitoring committee trying to spot civil rights violations and develop grounds for appeal.
Bill says: “Hillary spent a year after graduation working on a children’s rights project for poor kids.”
The facts are: Hillary interned with Bob Truehaft, the head of the California Communist Party. She met Bob when he represented the Panthers and traveled all the way to San Francisco to take an internship with him.
Bill says: “Hillary could have written her own job ticket, but she turned down all the lucrative job offers.”
The facts are: She flunked the DC bar exam; yes, flunked. It is a matter of record, and only passed the Arkansas bar. She had no job offers in Arkansas – none – and only got hired by the University of Arkansas Law School at Fayetteville because Bill was already teaching there. She did not join the prestigious Rose Law Firm until Bill became Arkansas Attorney General and was made a partner only after he was elected Arkansas Governor.
Bill says: “President Carter appointed Hillary to the Legal Services Board of Directors and she became its chairman.”
The facts are: The appointment was in exchange for Bill’s support for Carter in his 1980 primary against Ted Kennedy. Hillary then became chairman in a coup in which she won a majority away from Carter’s choice to be chairman.
Bill says: “She served on the board of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital.”
The facts are: Yes, she did. But her main board activity, not mentioned by Bill, was to sit on the Walmart board of directors for a substantial fee. She was silent about their labor and health care practices.
Bill says: “Hillary didn’t succeed at getting health care for all Americans in 1994, but she kept working at it and helped to create the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) that provides five million children with health insurance.”
The facts are: Hillary had nothing to do with creating CHIP. It was included in the budget deal between Clinton and Republican Majority Leader Senator Trent Lott. I know; I helped negotiate the deal. The money came half from the budget deal and half from the Attorney Generals’ tobacco settlement. Hillary had nothing to do with either source of funds.
Bill says: “Hillary was the face of America all over the world.”
The facts are: Her visits were part of a program to get her out of town so that Bill would not appear weak by feeding stories that Hillary was running the White House. Her visits abroad were entirely touristic and symbolic and there was no substantive diplomacy on any of them.
Bill says: “Hillary was an excellent Senator who kept fighting for children’s and women’s issues.”
The facts are: Other than totally meaningless legislation like changing the names on courthouses and post offices, she has passed only four substantive pieces of legislation. One set up a national park in Puerto Rico . A second provided respite care for family members helping their relatives through Alzheimer’s or other conditions. And two were routine bills to aid 911 victims and responders which were sponsored by the entire NY delegation. Presently she is trying to have the US memorialize the Woodstock fiasco of 40 years ago.
Here is what bothers me more than anything else about Hillary Clinton:
She has done everything possible to weaken the President and our country (that’s you and me!) when it comes to the war on terror.
    1. She wants to close GITMO and move the combatants to the USA where they would have access to our legal system.
    2. She wants to eliminate the monitoring of suspected Al Qaeda phone calls to/from the USA .
    3. She wants to grant constitutional rights to enemy combatants captured on the battlefield.
    4. She wants to eliminate the monitoring of money transfers between suspected Al Qaeda cells and supporters in the USA
    .
    5. She wants to eliminate the type of interrogation tactics used by the military & CIA where coercion might be used when questioning known terrorists even though such tactics might save American lives.
One cannot think of a single bill Hillary has introduced or a single comment she has made that would tend to strengthen our country in the War on Terror. But, one can think of a lot of comments she has made that weaken our country and make it a more dangerous situation for all of us. Bottom line: She goes hand in hand with the ACLU on far too many issues where common sense is abandoned.
Share this with every democrat you know. Ask them to prove Dick Morris wrong. Think about it – Dick Morris has said all of this openly, thus if he were not truthful he’d be liable for defamation of character! And you better believe Hillary would sue him.
Is America ready for a woman president ?
I believe we may be, just NOT THIS one .
When Bill Clinton was president, he allowed Hillary to assume authority over a health care reform. Even after threats and intimidation, she couldn’t even get a vote in a democratic controlled congress. This fiasco cost the American taxpayers about $13 million in cost for studies, promotion, and other efforts.
Then President Clinton gave Hillary authority over selecting a female attorney general. Her first two selections were Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood – both were forced to withdraw their names from consideration.
Next she chose Janet Reno – husband Bill described her selection as “my worst mistake.” Some may not remember that Reno made the decision to gas David Koresh and the Branch Davidian religious sect in Waco, Texas resulting in dozens of deaths of women and children.
Husband Bill allowed Hillary to make recommendations for the head of the Civil Rights Commission. Lani Guanier was her selection. When a little probing led to the discovery of Ms. Guanier’s radical views, her name had to be withdrawn from consideration.
Apparently a slow learner, husband Bill allowed Hillary to make some more recommendations. She chose former law partners Web Hubbel for the Justice Department, Vince Foster for the White House staff, and William Kennedy for the Treasury Department. Her selections went well: Hubbel went to prison, Foster (presumably) committed suicide, and Kennedy was forced to resign.
Many younger votes will have no knowledge of “Travelgate.” Hillary wanted to award unfettered travel contracts to Clinton friend Harry Thompson – and the White House Travel Office refused to comply. She managed to have them reported to the FBI and fired. This ruined their reputations, cost them their jobs, and caused a thirty-six month investigation. Only one employee, Billy Dale was charged with a crime, and that of the enormous crime of mixing personal and White House funds. A jury acquitted him of any crime in less than two hours.
Still not convinced of her ineptness, Hillary was allowed to recommend a close Clinton friend, Craig Livingstone, for the position of Director of White House security. When Livingstone was investigated for the improper access of about 900 FBI files of Clinton enemies (Filegate) and the widespread use of drugs by White House staff, suddenly Hillary and the president denied even knowing Livingstone, and of course, denied knowledge of drug use in the White House. Following this debacle, the FBI closed its White House Liaison Office after more than thirty years of service to seven presidents.
Next, when women started coming forward with allegations of sexual harassment and rape by Bill Clinton, Hillary was put in charge of the “bimbo eruption” and scandal defense. Some of her more notable decisions in the debacle were:
She urged her husband not to settle the Paula Jones lawsuit. After the Starr investigation they settled with Ms. Jones.
She refused to release the Whitewater documents, which led to the appointment of Ken Starr as Special Prosecutor. After $80 million dollars of taxpayer money was spent, Starr’s investigation led to Monica Lewinsky, which led to Bill lying about and later admitting his affairs.
Hillary’s devious game plan resulted in Bill losing his license to practice law for ‘lying under oath’ to a grand jury and then his subsequent impeachment by the House of Representatives.
Hillary avoided indictment for perjury and obstruction of justice during the Starr investigation by repeating, “I do not recall,” “I have no recollection,” and “I don’t know” a total of 56 times while under oath.
After leaving the White House, Hillary was forced to return an estimated $200,000 in White House furniture, china, and art work that she had stolen.
What a swell party – ready for another four or eight year of this type low-life mess?
Now we are exposed to the destruction of possibly incriminating emails while Hillary was Secretary of State and the “pay to play” schemes of the Clinton Foundation – we have no idea what shoe will fall next. But to her loyal fans – “what difference does it make?”
Electing Hillary Clinton president would be like granting Satan absolution and giving him the keys to heaven!

Yes it is! I had a problem with it a couple of years ago because I left gas in it and it got all gummed up. I took it apart several times trying to clean the carburetor and thanks to youtube I finally got it running. I learned a valuable lesson about leaving gas in it and I have started it several times since I got it running.
