January 24th open thread: Pick Yourself Up

January 24, 2016

open-threadHere is the open thread for Sunday, January 24th. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.

Last week we covered 11 stories, did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure it does not happen again. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.

In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.

The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!

Now onto the musical selection: A couple of times in the past I had thought about posting a video of one of my guilty pleasures in the open thread only to back out at the last minute, but in the comments section of last week’s open thread Lou tricked me 🙂  into revealing that little secret so this week I have decided to reveal it to anyone who missed that exchange.

My family knows that I am a huge Fred Astaire fan and that I own every musical he was ever in, but until now I have kept this knowledge hidden from everyone else. Today the veil is lifted, here is Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers performing “Pick Yourself Up” from the movie “Swing Time.”

In this scene Fred Astaire pretends that he does not know how to dance in order to get a free dance lesson from his love interest Ginger Rogers. After purposely stumbling his way through the lesson they go into “Pick Yourself Up” and then she tries to teach Fred Astaire how to dance again. Fred Astaire stumbles again which leads Ginger Rogers to declare she cannot teach him how to dance. The owner of the studio hears this and fires Ginger Rogers. Fred Astaire then shows the owner of the studio how much Ginger Rogers has “taught” him to the amazement of both the studio owner and Ginger Rogers. In this humorous scene Fred Astaire puts his hand up every time he dances by the owner as if to say “can you believe this?” She is immediately hired back.

You Tube did not have the scene in its entirety so the first video has the song while the second video has the dance, enjoy:

Hello Lou, Thank You for your concern, my lung. It might be, like previously ; a quick departure. I have just to pass the Winter.
A few Countries around, including mine want the Army as protector…(..and who will protect them from the Army ? ) …A New World Order ..Or A Forced Islamisation .. Is To Choice Between The Blue Pils and … The Blue Pils..
        God Bless You Lou!

Sorry to hear about the respiratory problems, I understand those well. Most winters I get something that hangs on, but unlike you I do not have to go to the hospital. Sounds like you would do much better in a warm, dry climate. I know that is easier said than done, however…one cannot just pick up and move.
I know what you mean about the either/or situation. Our Government offers about the same here….people want protection, but then you have to ask from what? There is a price to pay for all that protection and it is called freedom.

That’s right SDL, these people might want the army protecting them but that sounds an awful lot like Martial Law. People need to be careful what they wish for because under the wrong hands the “solution” might be just as bad as the problem.

Haha, doesn’t it feel good to come out and announce to the world that you LOVE MUSICALS? No shame in it, Steve! Those films took talent to make and perform in, unlike some of the crap we see today…alot of animation and special effects…unlike these movies we are talking about. Hope you feel better about it! Glad I could help!

I love the old movies, when you watch them you see a quite a difference from the movies today because they relied on acting where the movies today rely on special effects.

Those are fun Steve and ‘uplifting’! I think I’d rather be wearing his shoes than her high heels though!! Those shows had more of an innocence about them didn’t they. Yes, they were ‘social conditioners’ but not as dark and dirty down as most movies today!
    Some other nice, fun ones!

And now we have this 🙂

Zip, there is just something plain wrong with this video! Do you remember ever watching the series Ally McBeal? If not, there was a time when her “biological clock” was running out she thought and she say a dancing baby that kept bothering her…this reminded me of that part of the series.

It is strange isn’t it. Must be computer animated.

Okay, that last one was a little strange as Lou stated but there has always been a debate between Astaire fans and Kelly fans. Fred and Ginger also danced on roller skates once:

I’m sure they were great friends, but aLOT of competition going on. Aww those little babies put on a show and we all pooh pooh because they’re in-human! 😊

Haha, I used to go to the roller rink, then progressed to hockey skates in Wisconsin up on the lakes in the winter….now I would probably break a hip if I tried it…or not…guess will not know unless I take the Grandsons skating. They would probably love skating with “Nana”!
There was an innocence back then, for sure. but at least you did not have to turn the sound down or make the kids not watch as you do on some of the new movies.

As we say here, “you dodged a bullet” on that one, it could have been crippling in your area, as well. Glad to hear you didn’t have to get that generator started!

Back then I was playing bumper pool at a little bar. When that song played I would run the table and win every game in the lingering atmosphere of the room for most of the evening. I could dance them in. Ah…sweet memories of days gone by and gone forever. 🙂

Memories are wonderful things for the most part! How I long for days gone by yet at the same time do not regret where I am today. I was very young when this song came out but I remember it on the radio when we were driving places with my parents.

Oooh, that dates me a bit! I was way past the legal age to be pool shooting and beer drinking at the establishment. Ha, much talk about the establishment these days. Parents still doing their own driving without me in those days . Am ashamed that mom did come looking for me one time back then. She found me and made me get the heck out.
I did my duty though and drove her to all her doctor’s visits in the 2000’s until she passed in ’06@ 92. No pool playin’ then or since.

It must have been some sight to see you dragged out by your ear in front of everybody! 🙂 It probably was embarrassing back then but it is fun to look back on things like that and smile about them now.
