Ted Cruz’s support for giving Barack Obama ‘fast-track’ authority on the TPP is haunting him in Ohio

March 13, 2016

In the first half of last year the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was in the news quite a bit, along with Barack Obama seeking fast-track authority to pass the deal with minimal Congressional debate and without amendment (TPA). Here is part of what I wrote back then about the Congress willingly giving up its power to give advise and consent to the President on treaties:

The Republicans have been attacking Barack Obama for quite some time now as being an out of control, lawless, usurping President who cares not for the Constitution and the separation of powers contained within. They have been promising to “reign him in” and stop him from assuming powers not granted to him under the Constitution but today, when they had the chance, they voted to give him even more power.

Barack Obama has been pushing for fast-track authority on the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal he has been negotiating in private and today the President won a key battle when the Senate voted to give him the power he has been longing for–and yes, it was the Republicans who put it over the top.

The Senate Republicans, despite their pledge to reign in the President, handed Barack Obama a victory on the TPA and sadly Ted Cruz was one of the so-called anti-establishment Republicans who voted to give Barack Obama this extra-Constitutional power. He willingly ceded this power over to a President he had pledged to stop.

According to this story Ted Cruz’s support for the TPA is giving him trouble in Ohio and is a main reason why he is trailing badly in the polls:

A history of support for free-trade deals by Ted Cruz and his wife, Heidi, is dogging the senator’s campaign in the important “winner-take-all” Ohio GOP presidential primary, especially since the Cleveland Plain Dealer has just reported that the state lost 112,500 jobs last year because of the U.S. trade deficit with countries in the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement.

A CNN poll on Wednesday showed Donald Trump leading in Ohio, with 41 percent, over John Kasich, at 35 percent. Cruz was in third, with 15 percent.

The Cruz campaign on Thursday told WND that the senator supported Congress giving President Obama “Trade Promotion Authority,” TPA, generally known as “Fast Track.” It would allow the White House to push the Trans-Pacific Partnership, TPP, through Congress in an up or down vote with limited debate and no amendments.

But the campaign said Cruz always has opposed the TPP and supports TPA only because he favors free trade generally.

tpp-fast-track-1 Ted Cruz is trying to have it both ways by claiming he opposes the TPP while supporting the TPA because he agrees with trade agreements “in general” but I am not buying it and neither are the voters in Ohio.

He can claim he opposes the TPP all he wants to but his support of giving Barack Obama the authority to fast-track the legislation without Senate debate is unforgivable coming from a man who claims to be a constitutionalist. He supported the TPP with his vote on the TPA whether he wants to admit it or not.

At this point there is no candidate whom I can support in November. In the New Hampshire primary I voted for the only candidate I could support with a clear conscience, Rand Paul, even though he had already dropped out of the race. I am quickly coming to the conclusion that I will have to write him in in November as well…

According to Harvard constitional law professor Lawrence Tribe [he taught Cruz] Cruz is a constitutional opportunist. Tribe describes Cruz as an originalist – the constitution means what the founders wrote. However when it conflicts with Cruz’s personal needs at the moment then he applies his own interpretation. Harvard Law is part of the problem in this country it turns out compliant establishment lawyer cogs.

He’s HARDLY a “Natural Born Citizen” as the founders intended and defined. Jesus Christ until 15 months ago he could’ve been Canadian prime minister. This is exactly expressly what our founders did not want.

I like to call people like this selective-constitutionalists. They spout a good game when they are running for office but once they get there they don’t really care about it.

It is kinda funny the old fart is better at using social media then the newbies. The two cancelled events in St. Louis and Chicago played right into his message. George Soros can hire all the thugs he wants, but this is like pouring gasoline on a fire. Many Trump supporters see this for what is and are more determined to take on the crony elites.

For some reason I have a bad feeling this isn’t going to end well.

I think you are right about this playing right into Trump’s hands. It was obviously organized from above and now he is going to use it to his benefit.

From what I understand Cruz and Mrs Ted are both ex-Bushie support staff and appointees. Surely the pair learned well at the feet of geniuses like bro Neil and others of the clan. Via Rapioda!

I agree! Whomever wins the Presidency is going to use the EOs and none of them despite their promises are going to roll any of Obama’s back. That is the dirty little secret none of them will admit publicly.
