Homeland Security Classifies Returning US Veterans as Potential Terrorist Threat
This morning I wrote a post about a Homeland Security paper that warned about “right wing extremists” and the threat that they may pose to the government.
This paper basically lumped in people who are either pro second amendment, anti abortion, anti illegal immigration, or pro smaller government (or more than one or all of the above) with white supremacists and domestic terrorists. As maddening as I found that paper there was one aspect to the paper that I missed this morning and to me it is much more egregious.
This is what the Department of Homeland Security thinks about our military men and women who are overseas fighting on our behalf:
the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks
That is unforgivable. To suggest that some of our troops will come home and form or join terrorist groups is beyond reprehensible. And why suddenly is the Department of Homeland Security suddenly using the “T” word again when talking about our troops when they refuse to call the actual terrorists what they are?
The report continues:
Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to right-wing extremists,” it says. “DHS/I&A is concerned that right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize veterans in order to boost their violent capacities
I find it very interesting to see how these people really feel about our veterans.

The memo coming out of DHS sounds foreboding. Some seem to think it was meant to deflect the attention the Tea Parties would get today, but I have doubts about that. DHS has served it purpose well up to this time–I had some disagreements with them during the Bush years, but overall it appears they did a good job. Now however, they seem to be taking a political stance instead of a security one and this is troubling. We’ll have to see how this one plays out. This morning, we also learned that any person who has strong opinions, such as anti-abortion or the right to bear arms, may be a domestic terrorist. We need to read the document produced by Homeland Security, which may come to be know as the “Thought Police,” which in turn may come to be spelled “SS.” Those of us foolish enough to have opinions could find ourselves “detained,” questioned, perhaps prosecuted for “thinking.”
Ahh. 1984. It won’t get that bad. There are to many crazy right wing extremests, with too many guns.

Who made the comments about veterans being possible terrorists i would really like to know. Why would anyone want to call the Americans, that are putting their lives on the line to help us keep the way of life that we are all so used to, something like that?
Just curious, thats all i am saying.
My fellow Americans:
For twenty years I have been listening to liberals trying to portray conservatives as evil rather than regarding us as as a necessary competing economin and political theory. I regarded them as merely bitter at their lack of ability to hold political power and their lack of effectiveness when they do.
I have always been a strong believer in the two party system and regard the input from both sides as neceessary to arrive at the best solution to any problem. The events of the last few weeks have completely changed my mind and I now regard the left as evil.
The suguestion that our own returning veterans be classified and potential terror threats to be watched carefully. At the same time that we are in the process of closing the detention center at Guantanimo bay releasing known terror threats some of them into the population of the United States.
The liberals with the exception of a few seats necessary to achive a completely veto proof senate, have everything they could possibly want. Instead of setting out to prove they can lead more effectively than conservatives could they are more concerned with consolidating power.
The Tea Party movment composed of citizens concerned over runaway government spending are margionalized in the liberal media as Anti Obama right wing nuts. Americas returning veterans who should be regarded as heros are put under a cloud of suspicion. And the very free speach that founded the United states and is one of its most important principals has come under attack from the Speaker Of The House.
The Fairness Doctrine which was scrapped by the left so that the television and movie media could aid in the return to power of the left will be resurected in a new form. The left has consolidated control over television and the movies while abandoning the radio air waves to the exchange of conservative thought.
Recrafting the Fairness Doctrine in a way that would only apply to conservative talk radio is the goal of Nancy Pelosi. Once free speach is available only to liberals then what would be the next logical step in this “Agenda of evil”, I am only spectulating but my perdiction is the final assault on “gun rights”.
Make no mistake the attack on the U.S. Constitution is been raised to the level of full scale warefare. The rights to liberty, the persuit of happiness, peaceably assemble, keep and bear arms, self incrimination and when they are through only your right to life will remain in tact.
With even the U.S. military services regarded as a threat to this consolidation of power, who will police and supress conservative attempts to retain or excercise constitutional rights? The answer was proposed in a speach candidate Obama made in Colorado, A “Cicilian Security Force at least as strong as the military”. Obama even went as far as to imply the possibilita of a mandatory service in this organization.
The U.S. Congress has already taken the first steps to creating this organization by introducing H.R. 1388. Wether this organization remains entirely volentary or incorperates some form of mandatory service it is not the Conservation Corps of Roosevelt. I fear that it will be more like the Hitler Youth Corps that turned Boy Scouts into government agents reporting their parents for opposition to a totalitarian government.

What is happening in The United Stated is nothing new. The same has happened in most countries that have been overtaken by the world Communist cause. The relaxation of hostilities of outside enemies and the incorporation of enemy status to those internally that will not bend to the will of the reining regime. It has happened on one scale or another in Russia, China, Angola, Rhodesia, Viet-Nam and Cambodia just to name a few.
What we are witnessing is the prelude to a Soviet style pogrom, where those who do not follow the national program will be ostracized from our society. There will be no tolerance for free thought or any thought that does not center on the communist theme. People will be stripped of their ability to provide for themselves and their family and relieved of all the rights given to us by the constitution.
It is said that the new Communist world leadership has resided in the U.S. Congress since the 2006 election cycle. Be absolutely aware that the Democrat Party of Thomas Jefferson is no more! It now goes by the name of the Democratic Party. Some seem to think that this is a slip of the tongue or a modernization of the Colonial name, nothing could be less true. There has been a systematic indoctrination of the people of the United States to assume that the Democrat Party of Jefferson is the modern Democratic Party. This obfuscation was necessary. One could not outwardly start a Communist Party in the mid 70’s/80’s and hope to succeed. Stealth was needed to retain the Elderly Democrat base and the centrist middle (whatever that means) . It was also a priority to subvert the process that allows mainstream candidates top billing on the ballet. Look at the difficulty that Ross Perot encountered or in today’s politics the Green Party encounters. This Democratic Party has already demonized Jefferson, ostracized Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman and removed those that do not believe in the communist cause.
We are now the target! As a Veteran and an American Legion member I find an announcement such as this by the leader of an intelligence group such as the Department of Homeland Security an affront to every member past and present of our military. If this were a Republican Administration there would be calls from Congress to replace this department head. Since this is a key member of the “Obama Team” this will not happen things will get worse. At least one thing is obvious to all good Americans, now know where the terrorists are, in the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House!

I find that labeling returning troops terrist is very troubling. Did the government stop looking for threats outside of the country? These men and women are fighting to keep our country safe and this is the thanks they get. The real message here is not to even sign up for the military. If you get called overseas you become a terrorist when you come back home. And just because a person is antiabortion does not make that person a terrorist either. It is the actions of the individual that determine behavior, and not every person that dissapproves of abortion will go to extremes. If our country thinks of our troops as terrorists, why fight for it?
I did fight for this country , but that time has ended. I do not approve of my government any longer, and seeing the world has opened my eyes to limitless corruption and greed. My term of service ends this month and i will not look back for anything. This country classifies me for a threat for a good reason , I am disgruntled for the treatment of our troops and for the masses. our rights are bieng stripped away one by one. especially the most important… the second ammendment….without this….there is no freedom…OF ANY TYPE. this ammendment is the only thing stopping the government from doing whatever they please, for it is not the government that the people should be afraid of (yet we are) but it is the PEOPLE that the government should be afraid of and adhere to our wishes. for isnt that what this country was supposed to be in the first place? a democracy???? im still waiting for it….

Well I for one will never again do anything for the United States military or this regime we call our government again. I served twice, in two branches, in two wars. Now I am a terrorist?!? I don’t have exact statistics on hand but I would have to say there is a great number of these supposed terrorists all over the country. I would even say in the hundreds of thousands if not nearly a million. Not counting the ones that are not veterans per say and are still active duty at this time. Coming from different age groups, levels of society, and capabilities. I think it very ignorant for them to label, belittle, and insult the very people that guard their pathetic paper pushing lives. There are veterans everywhere, police, teachers, guards, political leaders, you name it, somewhere there are one or more veterans doing it or a part of it. By this they are even calling your grandfathers, and great grandfathers domestic terrorists. Men and women who fought in Vietnam, Korea, Bosnia, Somalia, South America, Iraq, Kuwait to name a few. And yes we fought in South America and Somalia in little know wars that the American people were for the most part spared from having to know to great detail. Spanning from World War II to present day. This means that all of those still serving today wether it be in one of the branches or the national guard, or in the ready reserves are all terrorists as well? This is the kind of political action that makes me want to take up citizenship in another nation to be honest. Taking from the words of Obama’s wife. For the first time in my adult life I am NOT proud of this country.

With all due respect, US Navy Pilots are required to be college graduates and, as such, can spell words like terrorist, smithereens, and would not, likely, publish expletives in the tone posted.

Wow, check it out. Ex NAvy Pilot changed his screen name again. Its not our government. This is a nation controlled by the people. The people have willfully given up their powers. The people have become robots buying whatever the media tells them to, at ridiculous prices. The people decided to spend and buy things they can’t afford. The people are playing into what the government is doing. I don’t like when my rights are violated, but at this point, putting me on their watch list is a badge of honor. I like the idea that the government sees the people as sheep, and vets as a serious threat. I am only a threat to those who deserve it. So this is an admission that they are doing something wrong. The oath stated to “… defend the constitution from all threats, foreign and domestic.” Domestic includes the people, the government, everybody, and I wasnt worried about vets doing something, but if they are, then they must know something I dont. Being a vet compels you to be prepared at all times. Not for anything specific, simply be prepared. Im not a terrorist. I carry a gun, and have never used it within the US. There is nothing to fear unless you are doing something that may warrant it. Its sorta like criminals putting cops on a watch list, because they are the only real threat to their careers and freedom.
We serve our country because it is our country. The politicians are not the reason we do this. We serve to preserve our way of life so that we can hand down to our children and grand children the freedoms and privileges we had.
As veterans we have sworn to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America from all enemies both foreign and domestic at all costs. I think that sometimes we forget that there are in fact domestic enemies. At this point these enemies hold elected office because not enough true Americans have become involved in the process. We have a Secretary of State and President that blame our way of life for others problems. We have a first lady who has had no trust in the American way. We have elected representatives that have broken the two party system down in order to subjugate the people of our great country to serve the will of other countries. These people my friends are Traitors and should be dealt with severely once we have regained our rightful place of leadership and the rule of law has been restored!

I myself am a veteran, having served with the USMC in Viet Nam. I suppose now that I, too, am a terrorist. I have since become an educated medical professional. It saddens me greatly that this country I love is in decline. The American people are very busy making a living and trying to partake of the American dream of freedom, dignity, peace, and the pursuit of happiness. So busy that there are those who would abuse these freedoms to conspire to enslave the population by stripping them of their right to pursue these dreams while we are too busy to notice. Make no mistake that this country is in serious trouble. The principles of true Democracy are being dismantled slowly but surely. At some point I cannot help but believe that there will be blood-shed, and lots of it. There are tyrants at the gate. And they are liberal-thinking socialists. They are not difficult to identify. I too serve. i am in the National Guard and came back not to long ago. i lost many friends and lost the person i once was. i didnt join the military because i wanted to become a terrorist. i joined to do what those before me have done before. Protect our Country and its well being. Screw those in the White House. i joined for America not for them. and i will continue serving America. NOT THEM….even though what they dictate i may have to follow but i will. I just wonder since i guess now that he labeled me a terrorist is Obama going to kick me out of the military or does he want me to continue to serve in the military? If i am a terrorist then i ask Obama to deal with me and get rid of me.

i hv served this great nation for over 10 years. i have been to korea twice and iraq 3 times, and this is the thanks i get for serving my country loyaly. there are terrorist in the united states and the DHS know exactly were they are, but they would rather put returning vets on the terrorist watch list. this is just a slap in the face for all my blood sweat and tears i left in the big sandbox. if this is how i am gonna be treated next time the polititions can go over there.

Yes, I am a U.S. VETERAN USMC and I am apauled that people like myself and my father who was in vietnam are now being labeled as “TERRORISTS.” So, I guess the reasons for me doing the right thing and serving my country and the many before me and the many to follow will have the same title “TERRORIST” that all of us have earned by doing the right thing. Ok, so be it. But guess what, I will continue to fight for whats right because I took an oath in 1994 to defend this country against all enemies… “FOREIGN and DOMESTIC and thats what I intend to do as long as it will keep my family safe from the people who are trying to turn this country into a communist nation. I served in Baghdad in combat arms. I’ve seen my share of bad things. To come home and hear this is what they think of us now just leaves a bad feeling. I don’t regret my service but rather regret who it was for. This should be a burning example of how far our government is willing to go. I love this country but our leadership needs to go.

“WASHINGTON, Jan 13, 2010 (IPS) – Suicides among United States military veterans ballooned by 26 percent from 2005 to 2007, according to new statistics released by the Veterans Affairs (VA) department.
“Of the more than 30,000 suicides in this country each year, fully 20 percent of them are acts by veterans,” said VA Secretary Eric Shinseki at a VA-sponsored suicide prevention conference on Monday. “That means on average 18 veterans commit suicide each day. Five of those veterans are under our care at VA.”
The VA estimated that in 2005, the suicide rate per 100,000 veterans among men ages 18-29 was 44.99, but jumped to 56.77 in 2007.
A Rand Corporation report last year found that as many as 20 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans exhibited symptoms of PTSD or depression. ”

“The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) states the nation’s homeless veterans are predominantly male, with roughly five percent being female. The majority of them are single; come from urban areas; and suffer from mental illness, alcohol and/or substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders. About one-third of the adult homeless population are veterans.
America’s homeless veterans have served in World War II, the Korean War, Cold War, Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Iraq (OEF/OIF), and the military’s anti-drug cultivation efforts in South America. Nearly half of homeless veterans served during the Vietnam era. Two-thirds served our country for at least three years, and one-third were stationed in a war zone.
Roughly 56 percent of all homeless veterans are African American or Hispanic, despite only accounting for 12.8 percent and 15.4 percent of the U.S. population respectively.
About 1.5 million other veterans, meanwhile, are considered at-risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.
How many homeless veterans are there?
Although flawless counts are impossible to come by – the transient nature of homeless populations presents a major difficulty – VA estimates that 107,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. Over the course of a year, approximately twice that many experience homelessness. Only eight percent of the general population can claim veteran status, but nearly one-fifth of the homeless population are veterans.

In addition to the complex set of factors influencing all homelessness – extreme shortage of affordable housing, livable income and access to health care – a large number of displaced and at-risk veterans live with lingering effects of post-traumatic”
Let us face it. There is a cost to war that our troops pay after they leave the battlefield. As a result, when they come home, some ARE vulenable to being used by terrorist groups. That is not to say that all are. Again, SOME, through no fault of their own, are suffering and desperately in need of help. Once again, that is not to say that ALL Are. If you read the report critically, you will undertand that if we don’t give those who need it help, then they MAY become a threat. That is not to say that they WILL. These are plain and simple truths. To think otherwise is to look at the world through rose colored glasses.
If there shame to be felt by anyone as a result of this report, it is us who should be ashamed.
The fact is we are not taking care of our veterans after they’ve put themselves in harm’s way for us.
