The Senate votes to table “cut, cap, and balance”

July 22, 2011

To the surprise of no-one the Senate killed off the House’s “cut, cap, and balance” bill which would have increased the debt ceiling while cutting spending and sending a balanced budget amendment to the people for a vote.

Here is some of what Harry Reid said in announcing this “victory:”

We just completed a very important vote. We have now demonstrated that the House Republicans’ Cut, Cap and Balance is over, done — it’s dead.

Reid said it’s time for the “process to move forward,” as lawmakers look for a way to “avoid insolvency.”

I find it interesting that at the same time the Senate voted to kill “cut, cap, and balance” without even having a debate on the issue, he declared that this makes it possible for the process to move forward. I say this because as of right now the House is the only branch of government which actually moved a solution forward in the first place and the Senate killed it without debating it. At the very least the House Republicans’ proposal could have been used as a means to move the process forward, but by tabling the only proposal on the table Harry Reid and the Democrats actually set the process back, they did not move anything forward.

Senator John Cornyn seems to agree with my appraisal of the Senate action:

The Democrat-led Senate’s failure to both produce a budget and pass the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act of 2011 underscores the Democrats’ irresponsible commitment to the status quo,” Cornyn said. “While the President and Senator Reid refuse to produce a plan to deal with our debt crisis or get debt help from the experts, Republicans will keep working to meet the nation’s fiscal challenges

How many times have we heard Barack Obama claim that he was willing to listen to all proposals from both sides of the aisle? Yet when the possibility to listen to a proposal became a reality he quickly brushed it aside calling it a calling it a partisan game and threatened to veto it. This hardly seems like the words of a man serious about bipartisan debate. Instead of using the bill as a springboard for more negotiation he called on the Senate to kill the bill and Harry Reid obliged him.

Harry Reid and Barack Obama have failed to introduce any type of plan whatsoever, but the House did introduce a plan and the Obama regime denounced it sight unseen and without debate. It is now back to square one because the Obama regime was too blinded by ideology to even make an attempt at reconciling this bill, while at the same time claiming that it is the Republicans who are refusing to compromise.

These frauds are trying to have it both ways; they claim the Republicans are unwilling to compromise while killing a Republican sponsored bill without even hinting at trying to compromise on this legislation. It is becoming abundantly clear that Barack Obama is the one who is most unwilling to compromise and it is time to call his bluff.

I figured Harry would be disappointed in this. Wasn’t he all set to filibuster it? Maybe he wised up and decided not to put the Senate through his usual snooze fest.

He called it the worst piece of legislation in US history and said he wasn’t going to waste his time with it. Whar Harry needs to remember is that the House is the peoples’ chamber so what he did was refuse to do the peoples’ business.

Obama is going to do what he wants by Executive Order.

He’s had no interest in doing what’s right. His goal can ONLY be to bring America to its knees!

Once again, we stew, we argue, we accuse, but all we’re doing is allowing the opposition of Obama, Reid, Pelosi, et. al., to continue their divisiveness of poke, prod, and agitate, when in reality all we’re doing is delaying the impeachment of Obama, …. Public Enemy #1!

I am afraid you are right, Obama will use the EO if he needs to on this, if he does I think the backlash will be strong and loud.

Dems are just backing themselves into a corner. Sad they have to put the country through this mess.

This is exactly what Senator Coburn said would happen. He wasn’t exactly enamored with is fellow Senators when he was speaking to them on the floor of the Senate.

Reid was afraid that if we had the weekend, we could have picked up the few Dems necessary to pass it. What is with McCain not voting.

The Dems are acting like spoiled children getting their abused credit card revoked by responsible parents who have to pay the bloated bill at the end of the month. Lots of kicking, screaming and idle threats.

That is a good way to look at it, and all the while they are trying to claim that it is the Republicans who are the immature ones.

I can’t think of a reason why John Boehner doesn’t march into today’s meeting with Obama and demand that Obama order Reid to call the senate back, put cut, cap and balance up for a vote before he will continue with the debt discussions.

Obviously, Reid knows that it will pass and he’s covering Obama’s ass by sending the Senate home before voting on it. This is standard operating procedure for the left and Boehner needs to learn the tactics and use them when appropriate.

This is the time to do that.

Wouldn’t you love to see Boehner put his foot down like that?! It would br fun to watch Obama and Reid squirm.

I don’t think the American people are paying attention yet (as hard as that is to understand). That’s the only explanation I can come up with for why they aren’t totally outraged by the hypocrisy of the Dems and the president. For all the dire predictions by those on the left – they’re making a mockery of the mission to stabilize America’s finances.

My guess is the Dems are willing to play chicken with the debt limit issue because they believe that after 50 years of tethering Americans to a government check, they’ve got them hooked. Dems believe they’re ready for that battle between the ‘haves” and the “have-nots”. Who wins in that battle? Haven’t the Dems already won?

I don’t think alot of Americans are paying attention to this either because I feel they believe in the end the debt ceiling will be raised and life will go on as before, but they don’t realize that this is about more than the immediate future, this is about our ability to continue to funcion as a country in the future.

I call Eric Holder “Eric the coward.” Using Tom Coburn’s logic, I can now add “Harry the coward.”
