Intelligence Committee Chairman claims Donald Trump’s transition team was under surveillance
Earlier today Devin Nunes made the claim that he had information which shows that Donald Trump’s transition team was indeed under surveillance. If this is true it could vindicate Donald Trump’s accusation from a couple of weeks ago.
Here is more:
Representative Devin Nunes said Wednesday that the intelligence community collected multiple conversations involving members of Trump’s transition team during legal surveillance of foreign targets after he won election last year. After Nunes went to the White House to brief Trump, the president told reporters “I somewhat do” feel vindicated by the latest development.
Nunes said he was “alarmed” to discover that the identities of Trump aides were revealed in intelligence community documents. “Details with little or no apparent foreign intelligence value were widely disseminated in an intelligence community report,” he said, adding that he didn’t know if Trump’s “own communications were intercepted.”
Technically these communications were not caught by “wiretapping” but I think in today’s day and age actual wiretaps are not used–this is probably an outdated term, but we know what the President meant.
Democrats on the Committee are claiming that while Devin Nunes shared this new information with the President he has not shared it with the Committee:
The committee’s top Democrat, Adam Schiff of California, said Nunes’s decision to go to Trump before informing other members of the panel “casts quite a profound cloud” over whether the committee can conduct a proper investigation.
Schiff said Nunes has to decide whether he’s going to lead the Intelligence Committee or “act as a surrogate of the White House. He cannot do both.”
If this is true I have to admit it is odd for the head of a Congressional investigation to be sharing the information with the President before sharing it with the Committee–is sure does look like a severe breech of protocol. Is it on the level of say, oh I don’t know, a tarmac meeting between the spouse of a target in an investigation and the Attorney General? As far as we know Donald Trump is not the actual target of the investigation where Hillary Clinton was so it is not quite the same.
However at best it was a very bad decision because it has given the Democrats on the Committee, and the mainstream media, talking points to distract the people from what the information he allegedly has contains. Instead of the story being the possible vindication of the President all we will hear about is how Devin Nunes mishandled this information and that is a shame. Instead of asking why Donald Trump’s transition team was under surveillance which contained “no apparent foreign intelligence value” we are now talking about protocol.
